AntiVirus for Windows Mobile?

Is this really necessary, I can only remember one reported case of malware for Windows Mobile. Any one else heard of any? So why would I need AntiVirus software for my device, when they’re not really being targeted?

symantec-logo-300dpi Symantec have announced their latest mobile security offering that works with Symbian and Windows Mobile devices, which offers AntiVirus, firewall and sms (short messaging service ) spam protection. Really the only point I can see in this is targeting enterprise consumers whose employees manage sensitive company data on their mobile devices, but is it selling ice to Eskimos? Is this brilliant foresight, scare mongering or a niche software developer, just doing what it does?

“Smartphones are expanding consumer freedom to communicate and access important information anytime, anywhere,” said Rowan Trollope, senior vice president, Consumer Business Unit, Symantec. “However, unsecured public WiFi or network connections can put users at risk. In addition, Web and e-mail viruses can directly infect smartphones, enabling hackers to remotely control the device, access sensitive information or disable applications. Norton Smartphone Security runs discreetly in the background, providing the confidence and peace of mind to engage in everyday activities like e-mailing, Web browsing or banking online from these handheld devices.”

I don’t think I’ll be running out to grab a copy, as it’s retailing for US$29.99, but I’ll be keeping an eye out for whatever, if anything, it catches.
