Review: JavoEdge JavoScreen 2.0 Ultra Clear Screen Protector

Screen Protectors are pretty much the bane of my mobile existence.  I look at them as a necessary evil (kind of like salad) and not much more.  Then again, when I look at how dirty the screen protectors can get, I am glad I at least attempt to use them.

Today, I am looking at the JavoEdge Ultra Clear, which is designed to protect your screen while preserving the clarity and transparency.

If it was up to me, I would just rip the screen protector out of the box and slap it on the screen.  Of course, this would be a terrible idea because it would just trap all of the dirt and dust against my screen…probably making it worse than when I started.

For this reason, JavoEdge has included a nylon cloth.  The first thing you should do is wipe the screen with this cloth (never use water or solvents to clean your screen).  I found the nylon cloth worked moderately well, but not nearly as well as the micro fiber cloth I normally use to clean my screen.

Now that the screen is clean, we’ll want to take a look at the screen protector itself.  As you would expect, it is a thin plastic film, which is about the size of the screen.  It is sticky on one side and smooth on the other.

One thing I really liked about the JavoEdge screen protector is that it has a protective film on both sides of the screen protector, not just the sticky side like many screen protectors I have used.

Now, the next step is where I have a hard time with screen protectors.  The instructions make it sound so easy.  Just peel the protective film halfway down the sticky side, align it on your screen, and press it down while removing the backing.  At the same time you are lowering the sticky side onto the screen, you should be using the included cardboard applicator to smooth out any air bubbles that may be left behind.

The instructions make this step sound so easy.  And it is not JavoEdge’s fault.  These are the same instructions that accompany most screen protectors.  Still, after a few hours of struggling, I usually end up feeling something like this guy…

So, any air bubbles or trapped dust in my screen protector are probably my own fault, not that of JavoEdge.

Once you have the screen protector in place, peel of the second layer of protective film from the top of the screen protector and you are ready to rock and roll.

The JavoEdge screen protector boasts that it will be practically invisible on your screen once it has been applied.  I found this was a fairly accurate statement.  I noticed almost no reduction in the clarity of my screen, brilliance of colors, or the sensitivity of the touch screen itself.

Nonetheless, I also noticed that this screen is a real fingerprint and dust magnet.  It is difficult to show in the pictures, however, every time I touch the screen with my finger, it leaves a smudge.  Granted, it is better to leave such a smudge on the screen protector than on my screen, however, before long this became quite a nuisance.  The smudges blocked my view of the screen and made it uncomfortable to use my device.

So, would I recommend this screen protector for your device?  I found it to be no more difficult to apply than any other screen protector.  Like I said, I ended up with a few air bubbles, but no more than I have seen from other screen protectors I have used.  Once applied, it worked admirably well, blending into the screen and protecting it without significantly reducing the clarity or sensitivity of the screen.  As long as you can live with a few too many smudges on your screen protector (but not on your actual screen) then you will want to check this one out.

Pretty funny, Ken. I just had a gift certificate for PPC Techs and ordered that exact one. :) We’ll see how it works, but I have heard some great things about it.

I just struggled with installing this protector on my Palm Centro and finally gave up.

I agree that the instructions make it look so easy! I could not keep dust or tiny fibers (shirt or hair) from getting stuck to the tacky side of the protector and then trapped between it and the screen. I struggled for about 10 min.

You can’t touch the bottom of the screen protector as that will leave a big finger print. It’s hard to get any dust or fibers off of it as it’s very sticky. You can use the included card to help some, but it will be some scratches in the tacky side which will be noticeable after installation.

The box the protector came in states that it is washable and reusable. The instructions don’t list any tips for washing it. I just ran it under some water and then trying to clean it up and reinstall it. This of course didn’t work at all. It really just made the tacky side have even more foreign material stuck to it.

I finally gave up and threw it in the trash. $10 I’ll never get back! grrr

I can’t say if this one is harder or easier than others to install as it is my first one I’ve tried. But I will say it was too hard for me and I gave up. I’m a very patient person too, so if I can’t get it right and get so frustrated I throw it away, that’s doesn’t bode well.
