Why?

OK – I’m sorry – this just seems funny to me.  Real funny. Above is a video demo of Palm OS Garnet (codename = dinosaur) ported by ACCESS to run as a virtual machine on a Nokia ‘Internet Tablet’.

Why?

Isn’t ACCESS meant to be doing something with Linux and mobile that will stand a small chance against Google’s millions and Android?  Is it worth devoting time to porting a ‘dead man walking’ OS to a platform that hasn’t exactly caught on like wildfire?  Even if you’re a Palm fan, that can’t fail to look silly to you too right?  The silly-sized screen clunking along in the middle of a large landscape screen.

Anyone think this is not silly and / or funny???

Well, I dont think it’s silly: Palm OS has TONS of GREAT titles like EDGE, Acedior etc.

Hi Werner – I can’t disagree that there are lots of very good Palm apps. But … the things that make this silly for me are:
- we all know Palm OS in its current form is way behind other mobile OSes, and it’s way overdue for the revamp that may get here late next year
- As good as the apps may be I’d rather see the apps ported to a more capable OS, not a dinosaur OS virtualized for use on other platforms
- Now that Google has thrown their enormous hat into the mobile Linux ring, I just think Access should probablyhave *much* better things to do than mess with porting the old, extinct OS onto a very minor platform.

I suspect that the reason we’re seeing this on a nokia device has something to do with the fact that with the folio gone there’s no Palm hardware out there that can run it.

Access have spent a load of cash on their version of the nextgen palmOS. And with Palm looking at cutting them out and using an in house PalmOSII linux platform Access are trying to demonstrate to the rest of the world that they have a viable platform.
