Sprint Mogul Owners Take Note

We have documented pretty well in this space the birth and evolution of the Sprint Mogul by HTC.  Judie and I reviewed this phone when it was initially released, and gave it very high marks.  Shortly thereafter, a new ROM (2.09) was issued which upgraded the Sprint music store.  That ROM, however, also interfered with the Bluetooth radio, causing some significant problems.

In October, Sprint issued a new ROM upgrade (version 2.16) which was met almost immediately with hostility.  Not only did this ROM make the problems with the Bluutooth radio even worse, it also caused several lockups in various situations.  Overall, not a successful upgrade.  Shortly thereafter, in fact, HTC removed the ROM from their upgrade site, with the following message:

NOTE: The ROM update version 2.16.651 posted on 10/24/2007 which had Bluetooth fixes has been removed. Update 2.16 caused some unanticipated conflicts in device performance. The Bluetooth fixes will be added to a future ROM update expected in early 2008. If you already updated your device to version 2.16, you can restore your device to the prior version by installing the file posted below. Please bookmark this webpage for future software updates.

Mogul users have now essentially been put on notice that the phone is broken, and no fix for it is imminent.  This is an extremely frustrating situation for me, as I have generally been very happy with my Mogul.  All I really ask is that it work properly.

Since that time, there have been numerous reports of people contacting Sprint and getting their Moguls replaced with other phones, primarily the HTC Touch.  This puts me in a real bind.  As I mentioned, I love the Mogul when it works, but right now it is not working properly.  I am currently in the middle of reviewing the Touch, and (as a slight preview) I have found it to be an extremely nice device.  In fact, the only thing stopping me from asking for an upgrade right now is the lack of a hard keyboard on the Touch.  So, for now, I really do not know which direction I will go.  Too bad Sprint does not have the Tilt, I would upgrade to that in a second.

Anyway, all of you Sprint Mogul users out there, you should really check out the threads over at the Buzz About Wireless, which is a Sprint forum, and see what your options are on this one.  It is a frustrating situation, but I am happy to see that Sprint is at least trying to make it right as much as they can.

And Mogul users, let me know what you decide to do.  Do you love your Mogul?  Do you plan to trade it in for a Touch?  Or are you waiting for some other phone to be released?

Doug, won’t you regret switching when/if the ROM update comes available? I’m sure they won’t let you switch back to a Mogul when the ROM update arrived. So now you have a hardware keyboard and a solution to problems coming, but if you change, you have a device that works, but not a hardware keyboard coming!

Perhaps a weird comparison, but you’re sure that your Touch isn’t getting a hardware keyboard, while the Mogul can be fixed.

Only because I didn’t bother to look and because I’m too lazy to atm – are there no “custom” roms available that address the problems? At least until Sprint gets their stuff together…?

@SPM. I agree, that is much the same lines as I was thinking. I am playing with the Touch seeing if there is a good option for entering data. So far, not so much. Too bad Sprint is not getting that TyTn II. :)

@Brandon, I have no clue. I have never been the custom ROM type. So, I really have not looked.

If you use a Blue Tooth 2.0 earpiece there is NO Blue Tooth problem with firmware 2.09651.3. I use the Plantronics Voyager 520 and the sound excellent for me and the person on the other end of the call.

I read reviews of Bluetooth earpieces before I got one and it was clear that ONLY those that are 2.0 work properly and FULLY with the Mogul. No complaints here.

Now about having to constantly close programs to keep the platform alive… that is the ONLY drawback of the phone I have seen so far. But diligent app closings keeps the system running sharply and for a VERY long time. Typical Microsoft short sighted coding that makes Apple owners so proud of their devices.
