Contest: Getting Scary with Sprite!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! – Comments are now closed. I’ll figure out the winners sometime shorty. Looks like we got a lot of responses so this should be fun!
CONTEST DEADLINE: Halloween 10/31, 11:59 PM US EST
Alright – so I’m a few days early in the declaring of Happy Halloween … but in the spirit of the season I figured why not team up the bringer of scary stuff with the folks who help make the scary times all better?
Sprite Software runs a monthly Sprite Backup Contest with us, with 3 free copies of their much loved and essential Sprite Backup product up for grabs. As an added bonus you’ll also get a copy of the ultimate tool – Sprite Terminator!
OK, so to win a free copy of Sprite Backup 6, it’s as easy as this:
- To enter for a chance to win, just add a comment to this post
- To get a second chance to win, Tell me your scariest device story. Did you drop it? Did you spill something on it? Did you throw it at your personal assistant?! That’s it – good luck to all.
- EDIT: By popular demand … I’ll also accept "captions" for the pumpkin as extra entries . Make me laugh but try to keep it fairly clean!!
By entering this contest, you authorize Just Another Mobile Monday, and its representatives, to provide your personal information (such as, but not limited to your name and email address) to the sponsors of this contest should you be selected as a winner. Your personal information will not be sold by Just Another Mobile Monday, or otherwise retained for any purpose except that described herein.

I have been traveling for 1 week and have not got time to do a syn with my laptop and my backup program was not functioning well. The battery runs low and I was not aware of it…Almost lost all the data…That was really scary…So do grant me SpriteBackup.

My scary moment was when my son told me he accidentally dropped my Axim 50v. I had visions of a cracked screen racing through my mind! How would I replace my “faithful friend”? I was greatly relieved when the screen came to life and the touchscreen still functioned.

Worst story for me? I could not get my device to boot after making some registry tweaks. Got to hard reset and spend the next 3 hours bringing the device up and configured as before. That was really scary, and of course, tedious.

scariest story? I NEVER go anywhere without my phone on my hip … never had a PDA before and am excited to finally have one. Anyway, I was busy at work and noticed I didn’t have it. i began frantically retracing my steps. Searched everywhere. My husband, who works with me, saw that I was getting a bit wierd. I thought I was going to cry. Then he said, “Did you lose something?” I knew then, that he had it. I had put it on the table and he hid it to drive me crazy. It worked.

The scariest thing that happened to me and my device was that I left home without my device for a week long trip.I appreciated the device even more after that nasty incident. But I was so worried that the battery will run flat by the time I return home, but luckily it survived.

Great software.
Upgraded to WM6 and trying out vaious apps. One of them bricked my pda and was unable to boot … I did not had any backup and I was only a couple of hours away from my overseas trip. Ended up losing all my appointments, contacts, etc …

I misplaced my newly-bought device in a public function once. Luckily for me,it was picked up by my family member (not a prank though). Otherwise, I am going to go crazy with the loss. That was real scary…

Scariest device story is probably when I used my then-new X50v as an MP3 player while I mowed the lawn on a dry Saturday. After finishing the lawn, I looked at the Axim and it was totally covered with dust. I was sure I was in big trouble, but after a little canned-air spray, it worked like a charm.

Worst scenario for me – I have to do a hard reset on my WM device before having all my data backed up. It was just not booting up.

There was once when I turned on the GPRS connection and forgot to turn that off. The battery just drains off after more than 6 hours. Lost some important client call logs that day, which I needed to refer to later. That was so scary I remembered till this day.

Scary: I tried to upgrade my device to WM6 using a downloaded ROM. All of the info says, “Use these ROMS at your own risk. You may ‘brick’ your device.” I decided to take a chance. The instructions said that it would take about 10 minutes. It actually took about 3 minutes to get to 99%. Those last 7 minutes (while nothing appeared to be happening) seemed like several hours! Fortunately, the upgrade finished and the device worked great.

Many of my colleagues carry the same PDA as me. There was once someone actually took my PDA thinking it was his after a meeting. Although he realized that only after 30 minutes, it was enough to get me worried sick. Lucky I have got all sensitive information managed by a secured list manager.

I wake up in the morning. Switch on my pda to check emails and it hard resets by itself.
This is not the best way to start a new day.

The very first day I had my TyTN with me I was on the way to the train station to commute back home. Was listening to a podcast with the TyTN in my backpack when I noticed two guys following me. Notebook robbery is common in that neighbourhood, I had to run in order to escape!

I have done many scary things to my PDA. Dropping it is the most common one. The worst one was I sat on it for 1 hour without even noticing it.

Nothing serious so far. The closest was when my device dropped off from my office desk, nearly hitting the floor, saved by my pedestal drawer.

I had a scare when my device refused to boot. Made almost 12 soft resets before it came alive. From that day onwards, daily backup becomes a religion.

There is a long scratch mark on my device. I had to put my phone inside my little courier bag one day as I forgot the device pouch which I normally hook on to my belt. I was traveling in a jam-packed train that day. Thanks to my bunch of keys leaving testimonies on the device cover, when I got out of the train and wanted to make a call, I saw the horrendous scratch mark. How scary and sad !!!

I was trying out an anti-theft software and accidentally enabled the option to wipe out all data upon a change in SIM card. So I changed my SIM card to my wife’s SIM card, powered up and boom, all data was wiped out. It was scary initially, but lucky me, I had backed up all my data before.

The scariest thing that happened to my TyTN is that it fell off from my car seat while I was getting out of the car. Lucky me, it was all protected with the BoxWave casing I bought. All is intact.

Scariest for me?!? That would be when my baby pokes a pen into the screen of my device. Fortunately, it did not make damage my screen. After that, I never leave my device within reach of my baby.

Count me in! Today my device simply wouldn’t turn on. I took out the battery replaced it, and nothing. I plugged it into a charger and the charger wouldn’t light up. Very scary. It turns out that the battery was so dead it was having trouble even charging. This is a problem with the HTC Wizards that I’d only read about before but now I’ve experienced it.

Gadget nightmare- just got my new Samsung i760- turns out it’s a bit slippery (much harder to hold than my Treo)- fell from about five feet up. I had only had it for a few hours!!! But, it survived.

I once forgot the password to log in to one of my devices (one of those 3rd party secured access add on). After 2-3 hours of trying every combination, I just could not figure out the password. Finally, I have to hard reset the device.

Wow JAMM is doing great! Really awesome, and it’s also really cool to see that Sprite is appreciating this by throwing in more prizes. I won last time so I won’t reduce your chances this time.
Good luck everyone!

Please count me in also…This isnt my story, but as a engineer I thought I would relate my funniest experience with an old Ipaq 5500…Customer put his laptop case which including his phone & PDA on the roof of his car to unlock the drivers door….He proceeded to get in to the car & drive off….Realised he had left his case on the roof which had no slipped off & reversed to go back & get it…He then reveresed over it completely destroying everything in the case….
What can I say….There was nothing in one piece…I was nearrly in tears when he told me.

Well – my story is not too scary – it is a story of my stupidity – I flash new ROMs on my TyTN quite often – once it refused to boot with no GSM error – took me two days to fix it…after that I synced the fresh system with my outlook forgetting that i set Active sync to overwrite things on my desktop – I had no contacts on my phone at that time – after the sync it also erased all of my contacts in my computer…I think if anyone seen me at the time he would be pretty scared. Thank you Sprite for your generosity.

Scary stories….. My family is full of them:
Great stories so far, add some more please!
My sisters mobile phones fell to toilet – one survived – with new sexy permanent wallpaper on it (water damaged the LCD screen), second one is usable except for telephone part… My cousin’s phone also fell to toilet – he took it back and dried it IN THE OVEN – the phone WORKED afterwards (strange enough). My friend’s phone cover fell to the ventilation shaft. I sat on my phone by accident – it made a crack to the mainboard but it still worked. One of my fellas was trying to repair the phone by letting it fall to the ground – if it did not work with one meter, he tried one meter fifty and higher – the phone ceased to work after two meters…My other cousin has his phones stolen every three months on average…(lost 4 of them so far) the list continues but even this is enough to claim that my family is something like Addams Family when it gets to cell phones
Dofo out…

My PPC has a software problem with pincode. So I can’t use it. When it’s stolen everybody can read my personal files. The Sprite Terminator is a great invention. This weekend my PPC crashed and ik took me 2 day to start it up. I was afraid it was only good for the trash can. It’s working but now I can install all programs again.

There was once my 2 year old nephew mistook my phone to be a toy phone and started banging on the table. When I realized it was my phone, my heart almost jumped out and I could sense I missed a few heart beats. Fortunately, the phone survived the ordeal except for some scratches on the edge. What scary moments I had…
