Who Still Cares About Zune – I Do …
As mentioned by Steve last night, there are tons of rumors (so many that’s it hard to think there’s not a lot of truth in them) about an impending launch of ‘Zune 2′ players from Microsoft. The rumors say we should see Zune 2 today, tomorow, or sometime very soon.
So … given the new iPod lineup as well as all the other worthy competitors from Creative Zen and Sandisk et. al., and the fact that the Zune has not exactly taken the world by storm in its first incarnation, does anybody still care at all about Zune 2? Is anyone even mildly excited at the prospect of Zune 2?
I am. Here’s some brief reasons why:
- I bought a Zune pretty soon after its launch and like it, and still get tons of use out of it. The Zune Pass is the biggest reason for loving the Zune. My music collection (of purchased CDs etc) is not huge, so the Zune Pass is just the ticket for me.
- Several reports I’ve seen suggest that MS will bring a major firmware update out to coincide with (or closely follow) the Zune 2 release. This is long overdue but would be very welcome, especially if it does something real with wireless on the Zune.
- I still believe that MS can bring something to the party in the portable media players arena, and maybe even keep Apple a little more on their toes if they do.
Anyone else a tiny bit stimulated at the thought of new Zunes on the way???

I agree with you that there’s still room in the portable media players arena to bring something new to the table. I think Microsoft will get it right. If Z2 is a flop, they may not try for a #3, but if this gets a little bit of traction, they can make it happen.
The key seems to be adding new features and elements that give it a better form factor while keeping it simple. I’m ready to see someone give the iPod a run for its money.

Noel / Mosio – think you’re right that if Z2 is a flop, prospects would be bleak. Keeping it simple is good, and they need to definitely update the firmware (keep us Z1 users on board) and do something meaningful with wireless.

Like Patrick, I also own a Zune, and still use it alot (especially the radio feature). I just don’t %@$%@#$% get it though, who the hell are MS designers or whatever you call them. I’m a sucker for nice/sexy/good looking gadget. Z2, really, nothing, nothing at all. Not even a tiny bit of appeal. We know they have the money, but WTF! Xbox is fugly, luckily it has lots of good game.
That’s how I end up getting a PSP, iPod, iPhone, ZEN, Dash, PS3, blah, blah… Why did I get the Z1, err. primarily for the Radio feature, and Bill Gates is my uncle.
Sigh….

Otay…
I might have take back everything I’ve said. LOL. Saw some official news release and from what I can see, looks like there is “sexy” lurking in there…
