The Dictionary Says Apple is…Insane?

Today Apple released a press statement. It goes a little something like this:

“CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple has   discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed.”

Read the rest of it here.

The people who buy the iPhone and hack it for whatever reason, are saying to Apple that they want to live outside of the “box” that Apple has put them in. The users want a choice of carriers, and they want 3rd party software. They will go to any extent to get it. From the first day that the iPhone was released, the hacking began. The more that Apple fights it, the more the hackers hack. Heck, the more I tell my kids to stop whatever they’re doing, the more they do it!

You know how I became a great parent? I took the Microsoft approach to parenting. I changed the rules. In the Microsoft world, hacking is encouraged. Now my kids love me:) And customers love third party software. To me, this is a repeat of the initial computer war that Apple and Microsoft had at the beginning with the PC v. the Mac, way back in the early 80’s. Apple had a better product but locked the architecture. MS did the opposite, they opened up the architecture. We all know the story. Apple, for some reason, thinks they can make money selling hardware. They should get out of the hardware business and into the software business. They are damning themselves to repeat the same mistake.

Does anyone know the definition of insanity? Read more at Aximsite.

So apple gives us the BIG upgrade… let’s see…
yep, it let’s us put in a period without having to dig down another level.
yep, you can actually HEAR the phone now
oh yeah… and now you can spend even MORE money with them buying songs over the air.
Amazing how the biggest change is something that makes them more money…
For my money, the biggest iphone news today is that gmail is further optimized for the iphone. Guess what… because of it I can now type emails with the phone in landscape. It is a HUGE improvement in functionality. And it didn’t even cost me anything.
    Thanks google.
    Thanks for nothing apple.

Very good point Dan. The google optimizing for the iPhone definitely was some if the best news of the week.

Obviously the period and iTunes thing weren’t the only useful updates in the 1.1.1 firmware but given how much stuff it broke I’m glad I didn’t bother to run it.
