Zune vs. iPod – No Contest?

knockout

OK, I know Brandon (and many others) would argue that this was really not much of a contest even before yesterday’s Apple announcements on refreshing the whole iPod line and adding to it etc.   But … after seeing that new lineup, things don’t look very bright at all for Microsoft and the Zune.

Jason Dunn at Zune Thoughts has a brief and thoughtful post on this subject:

Today isn’t a good day to be a Zune fan, that’s for sure. Why? Because Apple unleashed a new wave of iPods today, and they’re every bit as impressive as I was fearing they’d be.

I know MS has often talked about being in this for the long haul and so on, but 110 million iPod users as of Steve’s talk yesterday is a huge installed base. And now Apple has one heck of a potent new lineup ready for holiday buying season. I tend to agree with Jason that, unless the Zune team has something downright amazing up their sleeve very soon, things do not look hopeful.

What do you all think of Zune’s chances of making this a real fight, even over the long haul?

Well if you believe the images posted around the net lately, the “new” Zune is more of the same.

I agree things don’t look so well for the Zune team.

Especially with the WiFi news yesterday from Apple. That’s just embarassing from an MS perspective I think. They had WiFi first and after all these months, they’ve done absolutely nothing interesting with it at all. And then Jobs waltzes up and says ‘Here’s what you do with WiFi if you’re going to bother having it’.
I still like my Zune, but I have to admit I have never once *used* the WiFi for anything at all …

When I was looking at MP3 players a while back, I spent a considerable amount of time looking at the Zune. The problem I had with them is that they are about the same size as the original iPod was 10 years ago. I mean, come on MS. Why can Apple put 160GBs in a freaking credit card and the Zune is still the size of a brick with 30 GB.

And still no BT?!?!?!?

I just wish Logitech would merge with MS or at least the design department…

Then MS will probably have slight chance…

sigh.

Yes, I was very excited when I found out about Microsoft’s Zune player and that it had WiFi. And I didn’t buy one because the WiFi does essentially nothing. Yes, Apple slapped MS around a bit with the iPod Touch announcement. No, I am not an Apple fan-boy. The touch might actually be my first Apple product ever. I’m sure MS techs are going to be forthcoming with the Zune’s WiFi browser/shopper update now. Too bad they can’t add a touchscreen.

NoWire. I agree. I am becoming quite a Logitech fanboy lately. They have an incredible and creative design department.

PocketBrain, I think whatever MS does with the Zune now will be too little too late.

Now I’m a Zune fan – but I reckon if Logitech and MS got together in this area they might well come up with a … wireless mouse.

Yes, but a wireless mouse that when you touched it, things would move around on the screen. :)
