Review: Listen To The Sound Of Music With The Boxwave Stereo Converter/Adaptor for Sprint Mogul

image When Judie and I reviewed the Sprint Mogul by HTC (PPC-6800 or HTC Titan) one of our big concerns was listening to music on it. Not the actual playback of the music itself. That works perfectly fine with Windows Media, or any number of third party applications (personally, I am partial to Conduits Pocket Player).

The real problem was hearing the music. There is no onboard headphone jack. Instead, the Mogul included an adaptor which plugs into the mini-USB on one end and has a dual jack on the other end with a mini-USB (for charging) and a 2.5 mm headphone jack.

As I noted in our review, this presented several problems. Most importantly, the vast majority of high quality headphones utilize a 3.5 mm plug, meaning that these headphones would not work with the Mogul at all. Sure, there are numerous adaptors out there which allow a 3.5 mm plug fit into a 2.5 mm jack. Most of these, however, resulted in significantly decreased audio quality, typically including mono instead of stereo sound. Additionally, because of the dual plug design of that adaptor, the result was a several inch long, unwieldy hunk of plastic. I

had all but given up on listening to music on my Mogul when I was poking around the Boxwave site the other day, helping put things together for our big contest which Brandon kicked off yesterday. There, I found the new Stereo Converter/Adaptor for the Sprint Mogul.

Boxwave’s specialty seems to be offering those little accessories which really should have come with your device, but didn’t. This is a perfect example. I have no idea why Sprint and HTC did not offer a 3.5 mm earphone jack with the Mogul, but Boxwave stepped in nicely and filled in that mistake.

As the above picture shows, the Boxwave adaptor is about the same length as the one which was included with the Mogul. Because it does not have the charging connection, however, it is considerably less bulky than the Mogul version.

So, let’s see how it works. I just plugged the mini-USB end into my Mogul, and then plugged my V-Moda Vibe headphones into the 3.5 mm jack. Open up Pocket Player and we are ready to rock. And I mean ROCK! In full stereo sound. Perfect.

The 3.5 mm adaptor is an accessory which should have been included with the Mogul. The fact that it was not, is the fault of Sprint and HTC. The fact that I can now enjoy stereo sound is attributable entirely to Boxwave.
