iTunes Gives Away Music by People You’ve Actually Heard Of

I just got off the phone with Lucifer. He wanted to know if I’d seen his skis. That’s right, folks, hell has frozen over, and iTunes is making songs from the latest albums by the Boss and Sir Paul available for free download. Look for “Radio Nowhere” by Springsteen and “Nod Your Head” by McCartney.

Now, the kind souls at the iTunes Store put out a free “Single of the Week,” and about twice a year they catch a nobody right before they hit it big, like Amy Winehouse or the Fray. Most of the time, though, those people you never heard of — there’s a reason for that.

Could these releases be the sign of bigger changes to come at Apple? And what will we see next — an iPhone that can make calls?
