Alltel, Windows Mobile — Windows Mobile, Alltel

image Do you subscribe to Alltel for all of your wireless needs? No? Wait…I thought I saw a hand or two up there in the back. Well, aren’t you Alltel subscribers sick and tired of reading post after post day after day about all of these amazing new phones coming from HTC, i-Mate, and others? Phones with Windows Mobile 6, a full QWERTY keyboard and other amazing features. Phone which you will never see?

Well, feel the jealousy no more. Alltel is not just adding Windows Mobile 6 to its lineup, it is jumping straight to the head of the pack with one of the most feature rich Windows Mobile 6 phones available.

In addition to its standard line of telephones, all of which can make and receive telephone calls, Alltel will now begin offering the PPC-6800 (otherwise known as the Sprint Mogul and HTC TITAN).

The PPC-6800 will retail for $250 with a two year Alltel contract.
This is considerably cheaper than its counterpart, the Sprint Mogul. I have the Sprint Mogul and it is a truly amazing phone, so if you have Alltel in your area this might be worth checking out.

For more information, check out the Alltel product page (via WMExperts).

Not me… Alltel doesn’t cover my area. They cover the less populated areas of Colorado, but not where the millions live. It’s like AT&Ts 3G rollout plan. Which much like Alltel is advertised all over Denver TV stations but isn’t available.

The Alltel version of the 6800 is loaded with WM5 not WM6. That’s what’s on the their website.

I noticed that as well. WMExperts noted, and I agree, that this is probably a mistake. The PPC-6800 is designed to run WM6, and it does not make much sense for them to downgrade that capability to WM5. Then again, stranger things have happened. If anyone uses Alltel and has a chance to check out the phone and let us know what OS it is running, we would love to hear from you.

Checked on ppcgeeks forum, Alltel version of the 6800 comes with WM5.

Apparently, what I am hearing is that it will ship with WM5 and almost immediately have an upgrade available for WM6.

That really makes no sense to me. All of the screenshots on their site depict WM6, the PPC-6800 is designed for WM6, so I am not really sure why they are doing it this way.

Then again, maybe doing things like selling one of the premiere WM6 devices with WM5 is the reason that Alltel is affectionately known as that other guy.

Talked to advanced tech support at Alltel. He said that the upgrade is ready to go they are just waiting for another department to build the link on their website apparently. The upgrade will be available if you go to Alltel, then click on Phones, then click on the HTC PPC6800, then click on details and click the Technical details tab (I think that is what it’s called.)

I asked if they’ll send a text message and he said no, I just need to keep checking the website.

It is a very sweet device though–will be even better with WM6.

Later..

JMan, I have been using the PPC6800 for a few months now with WM6. It is an amazing device. Especially when you add in Sprint’s fantastic data service. :)

I just moved from Sprint to Alltel to get the 6800 at a better rate.

The beauty of Alltel is that they have data roaming agreements with both Sprint and Verizon. My data performance with Alltel is just as good, if not better, than my Sprint 6700 was.
