Laptop Cases and Jackets?

Posted by: Steve Laser on Jul 31 2007

I’m so used to preaching about protecting your pdas and smartphones with cases that are always on, and now my boss is getting me a laptop for work.  So the first thing I thought about was getting a case for it that would always remain on, like a Sena Case.  To say the least, I have been quite surprised to learn that there are so very few choices in the market for "always on laptop cases" that I’m quite shocked.

I found a few, but they aren’t made of leather, which is what I favor.  They are canvas or neoprene.  Hey, I want to protect my lappy, and I want my case to remain on at all times.  I will put it in my briefcase for traveling, so I don’t want the case to be large or obtrusive.  Is this a novel or crazy idea?

Above is one from Protectcovers.  They have the right idea.  The case is always on, just unzip and you’re ready to work.  But $75 for canvas is a bit high in my book.

Here above is another cool idea, this one from Belkin.  It’s called the Pockettop, and it goes for $50 beans.  It protects your lap from the heat of your computer.  You can use it around your house, it’s washable and it’s like a built-in tray table.  They have a less expensive version called the Sleevetop.  Again, not leather, but good ideas.

The case I want is like the one from Case-Mate

$160 smackers, and it’s beautiful.  Great fit and finish.  Beautiful craftsmanship.  Sweet leather.  "Each Suit is first outfitted with an impact resistant plastic shell and then wrapped in resilient Italian Pebblestone leather."  But they only make ‘em for iMac.  I want Pebblestone leather!

So what now?  My search continued.  I found a neat company called Shoreline.  I ordered their Classic Jacket for about $30 through JR.  It should arrive tomorrow.  My new Dell laptop should get here next week.  I’ll do a review and let you know what I think.

What I like about the Classic is the access for the cables in the rear, the sidewalls leave room for the cd/dvd burner, and it always stays on.  It’s not leather, however.

The company I work at has many professional sewers, and they have said they will help sew a new leather case for me if I supply the leather.  There is a large leather supply shop nearby.  After I see the pluses and minuses of this case, I will possibly design a new prototype leather case.  Steve Laser Designs…?
