iPhone Success a Mystery

Numbers run the world – and right now, AT&T has revealed first, yet inconclusive results of the Apple iPhone’s success as it only covers the first 1.5 days that this little phone was available due to the closing of the quarter. So was AT&T on target? According to Brighthand, investors think that 146,000 units and subscriptions sold is a disappointment. But let’s look at reality – how many people buy things on the first day it is released? How many more during the first week or even the first month? Well, it’s hard to say, but it’s already near the end of July, and for people out there, getting an iPhone may mean patiently waiting until the winter shopping season or even for their existing contracts to complete. In addition, 40% of iPhone subscribers came to AT&T as a new customer – ka ching!

Should investors judge the results negatively so soon? Who knows? As the iPhone catches on and consumer envy strikes, more people would probably get the iPhone as it’s a status symbol of Apple leetness which could be associated with owning an Apple product whether it be a Mac or an iPod (so my Apple wielding friends say – which still is a mystery to me). And as always, some things just take a little while to take full flight.

Regardless, we’ll soon find out just how well the iPhone holds it’s ground against other smartphones.
