ATT, NTT DoCoMo partner up on 3G rollout for Hawaii – Rant coming. Close your ears.

Ok … NOW I AM PISSED OFF #%$&#* … so most of this is not going to make much sense.

(No offense to the folks in Hawaii … I understand you are just like the of us. The ensuing rant is aimed squarely at the blockheads from AT&T)

How does Hawaii end up getting slated for 3G service (one island this year, the rest in ‘08) when nearly every major city in the continental US is struggling with EDGE data services and has almost zero hope of getting 3G service within the next few years?! Most cities with 3G are spotty at best…

Does this make any sense??!!! AT&T what in the heck are you people doing? Can you not comprehend the amount of people that are waiting (some like me impatiently) for 3G service that have been with you for years? Do you understand how crappy your service is in most cities? I wonder if anyone at AT&T happened  to read any of the reviews for the iPhone? In (almost) EVERY REVIEW of the iPhone people mentioned not that the iPhone sucked – but that the cell service from AT&T SUCKED.

AT&T – the time has come to pull your head out. I can’t say more because we do have some family readership… but suffice it to say I can’t wait until my contract with you retards expires. The worst thing that ever happened to Cingular was you.

Hawaii – Pop. 1.2 Million — The WHOLE state

Denver, CO – Pop. 2.4 Million – metro area

Minneapolis, MN - Pop. 3.2 Million – metro area

Boston, MA – Pop. 4.4 Million – metro area

Etc… Etc… Etc…  Makes me want to cry. Or just pony up the $150+ cancellation fee.

(I do however admit that I’m glad to see two big companies working together for the benefit of their customers. I just wish it didn’t take a 20+ Million dollar gift from NTTDoCoMo in order  to get AT&T to get their act together.)

As more and more companies join in the fight to nix international roaming charges, it’s not too shocking to find NTT DoCoMo taking the shortest route to the US and hooking up with AT&T on a 3G rollout. More specifically, DoCoMo has apparently agreed to provide "technical assistance" and shell out "up to $24 million" in financial support for the deployment of AT&T’s 3G network in the state of Hawaii. Under the deal, AT&T will launch a 3G network based on W-CDMA technology, and from what we can tell, DoCoMo customers vacationing in Hawaii won’t be faced with those pesky roaming rates. Sadly, no hard timeline was laid out, but the island of Oahu should be lit by the year’s end, while the rest of the state will get served "in early 2008."

Amen. Unfortunately, I think it is going to take a mass exodus in order to get ATTs attention. Otherwise, it’s just business as usual. They are too worried about their bottom line in the here and now, and seem to be oblivious to the fact that other data networks are leaving them behind. That translates into lost business in the future.

Hawaii receives tremendous income from Japanese tourists (and businessmen). NTT DoCoMo is also making moves on Guam (a US possession in the Pacific Ocean). From a business standpoint this is excellent news. From a major city dweller on the west coast of the mainland, this plain sucks. Congress should require this spawn of Ma Bell to provide identical products and services nationwide or break it into smaller carriers.
