Don’t you hate it when you get a call while you are in a crowded arena, or on a busy street?  You push memory 1 (because that is the universal code for call voicemail, and strain to hear the garbled message.  Well, now CallWave is offering a better alternative.  Today, they announced the availability of the CallWave Vtxt service, which is free to beta users at www.callwave.com. Starting today, subscribers (a subscription is free during the Beta period) can sign-up for Vtxt and receive the “gist” of mobile phone voicemail, delivered to their handsets in one text message without changing their mobile phone, number, or wireless service provider.

“Text is the new voicemail,” said Dave Hofstatter, CEO, CallWave, Inc.  “We’re using the power of text to transform the way mobile subscribers interact with their voice messages.  They can now stay up-to-date on voicemails, simply by reading a Vtxt Gist – delivered to their handset right after a call is completed.  Yes, it’s that easy.”

I have been using Vtxt for a few weeks now, and I can tell you that it is a rousing success.  I can receive voicemails on the train, where I can barely hear myself think, and quickly read a summary of the message on my phone’s screen.  I have been extremely impressed by the accuracy of the transcription as well.  It does a fantastic job of pulling the meat of the message and ignoring the extraneous information.
