Apple Introduces Safari for Windows

w00t?

Being a fan of Apple I welcome the browser being available to Windows … but I really have to question if anyone is going to make the switch? Also, if anyone happened to catch the info on Leopard due out in October and can point me in the way of a Windows utility that functions like Stacker — LET ME KNOW!!! I’m thinking I’ll be looking into a new MacBook/Mini come October when Leopard is released.

Apple today introduced Safari 3, the world’s fastest and easiest-to-use web browser for Windows PCs and Macs. Safari is the fastest browser running on Windows, based on the industry standard iBench tests, rendering web pages up to twice as fast as IE 7 and up to 1.6 times faster than Firefox 2. Safari joins iTunes in delivering Apple’s legendary user experience to both Windows and Mac users as well as full support of open Internet standards. Safari 3 features easy-to-manage bookmarks, effortless browsing with easy-to-organize tabs and a built-in RSS reader to quickly scan the latest news and information. Safari 3 public beta is available today as a free download at www.apple.com/safari.

"We think Windows users are going to be really impressed when they see how fast and intuitive web browsing can be with Safari," said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. "Hundreds of millions of Windows users already use iTunes, and we look forward to turning them on to Safari’s superior browsing experience too."

From what I’ve heard, it’s less about “making users switch” and more about pitching Safari as an iPhone companion. Since Safari will be running on users iPhones and since Jobs announced the Web 2.0 app support of the device, it’s a very small jump to Safari on the desktop supporting the same Web 2.0 apps.
I’m not planning on buying an iPhone and I’m reasonably happy with my Firefox / Maxthon setup but I’m always willing to try something new so when this is available I’ll give it a shot. I’m not a typical user though.

I downloaded it, and will use it for a while. First glance, I’m not sure about the case for using it instead of Firefox, but we’ll see. I think it’s about the iPhone (which I still don’t want — sorry but Safari-based web apps are a poor substitute for real installable apps), but also about exposing PC users to more and more of the Mac experience. So now I’m using itunes and safari, why not go all the way when the Dell PC finally gives up the ghost? The hardware cost difference is the only thing holding me back – an iMac or Mini is still $300-$400 more than an equivalent Dell, and the laptop differential is even more. If Apple can either address that or convince me that they’re worth it, then I’m there.

I’ll be giving it a go later today/tonight. I’ll let you know what I think. I’m a fan of both Windows and OSX … so it wil be interesting to see how they’ve done.

Oh, and cost aside and having played a bit with Vista – I’ll be buying a Mac for my next computer. Vista lasted about 1 day on my laptop before it was gone. I had more complaints than I can remember… When I had a Macbook I had almost none (yes I still had some) but nowhere near as many as I had with Vista.

To touch on Melvynadam’s post — that’s (for me) a big selling point of the iPhone – built in full featured Safari. I’m so sick and tired of the bullshat PIE browser… it’s a complete joke and I can’t believe MS still pushes it on all the mobile devices. It’ll be nice (if I drum up the cash for an iphone) to have an actual useable browser to surf on. Sure there’s always Opera…

Well, I gave Safari a shot yesterday, and was completely underwhelmed. It really can’t compare with Opera. Perhaps this was a mistake, as it will show that Apple’s software isn’t always top notch.

Yea … i agree it’s a double edged sword. Personally I wouldn’t have started with Safari as a Windows software. I think iPhoto and many of the other apps on Mac are worlds better than Safari. Personally I used Firefox on my Mac. much more stable :)

BUT … I REALLY found myself missing IE on the MAC.
