Free Stuff…Get It While It Lasts!!

Did I say free stuff? Yup. That’s right, I meant FREE. And who doesn’t like that price. This one is coming at us from DIVX Pro 6, one of the most popular digital video authoring and playback formats available today. Normally, Divx offers a standard version of its player for free, and a pro player for $20. Today (and today only), you can receive the entire pro player of their latest Divx 6 absolutely free. No strings attached. Well, unless you check the boxes asking fro additional information, but don’t blame us for that. My copy is downloading right now.

[Update: I tried to do this download only to find that it will not work with Windows Vista. Divx is not currently supported for Windows Vista. So, if you are a MAc or XP user, download away. If you are a Vista user, you may be out of luck. Vista users, let us know whether you can get this working and what your experience is like.]

Anyone interested in knowing how this “giveaway” was funded should do the following three steps:

1. Ensure you have decent antispyware software in place.
2. Download and install the “free” software.
3. Reboot and review the logs of your anti-spyware application.

My Webroot Spy Sweeper application had a fit this morning (my first reboot after installing this “freebie”). At startup my machine tried to access TENS of very dubious websites and Spy Sweeper blocked them. I presume the accesses would have been “behind the scenes” and not popups otherwise more people would have been reporting this.

We’ve gotten so used to the increasing number of decent, honest software houses giving us quality clean freeware that sometimes we forget about the darker possibilities. Please beware.

I’ve also installed this DivX Pro, but didn’t have any weird internet pages starting by itself. But you make a good point, we should always be aware about how companies define “free”, no matter how known the term “DivX” or any software publisher is.
