earthcombmovieEarthcomber announced a five-fold expansion in content for its free mobile application, with over 10 million places and events in the United States. At the same time, the company has expanded its application for most mobile devices, including cell phones, BlackBerry phones, and smart phones powered by Palm OS and Windows Mobile.

"Earthcomber now gives you hands-down the most instantaneous, comprehensive local-information you can get on anything mobile in the U.S.," said Jim Brady, president and founder of the company. "The new Earthcomber is designed so you can scan your surroundings in seconds and get information that would take you hours to find and wear out your thumbs using search-box mobile applications."

Earthcomber also spots movies at 5,400 theaters and 30,000 screens.Users can search either for the closest screening of a specific movie title, or the closest theater, with prices and show times in detail.

The program uses the GPS capabilities built into most phones to track movement and provide maps and information of where you are (if you don’t have GPS whether built in or via some expansion, you can select your location manually). After that just selected what you are looking for – from movie theaters to business and shopping. You can only select by category so you cannot just tell the program "find me the nearest Pizza Hut" as it will only display all the restaurants that are around your location. Should you have internet access, then you can use the "Get Directions" feature. The application can be downloaded and used on a mobile device or an online version can be accessed via a web browser.

Earthcomer looks to be pretty handy especially for users with internet access and GPS. For those without those two luxuries, it’s still a useful program that can provide information on places of interest (like the nearest gas station) as well as providing basic maps. If you are good at using maps, with a bit of difficulty, you’ll be able to navigate just based on two points to some degree of success as you can search by street name and number. Pretty good for a free product.
