Google Gears: Online or Offline?
Posted by: tjchan on May 31 2007
Brandon just sent me a link to LifeHacker talking about the really new and really cool Google Gears! This just makes my favorite RSS reader of all time even better..now I can read news in Google Reader while offline. It’s available to Mac users as a FireFox plug in or Windows as a sperate application.
It downloads 2,000 items for me and now you can see a little green arrow which allows one to go on or offline.

Read past the jump for some more thoughts….
If I’m offline, then I get a connection error and it automatically switches gears to offline mode. When I get back online, it syncs it up with the online application.

What potential does Google Gears have? Remember Google’s office applications? Problem before was that you needed a solid internet connection. Coming soon, with this technology you can be offline at times and everything would still run just fine! Google has made the API’s freely available so that anyone can create pages that have both online and offline functionality by using Google Gears.
For a walk through on how to install and use Google Gears, see LifeHacker.
