A New Revolutionary Computer Experience Surfaces from Microsoft

The news is out! Microsoft’s latest and greatest technology development is…Microsoft Surface!

Download a history of Microsoft Surface here and make sure to check out the videos on the Microsoft Surface website.

Microsoft Surface is truly revolutionary as it is a total touchscreen interface. Much like technology right out of a computer game, Surface allows a large coffeetable style computerthat has a touchscreen that reacts to everyday objects – from brushes to larger objects like hands. Using cameras from above, it it can also ID objects and immediately bring up information about the objects such as  2 different cell phones in which case, it’ll bring up comparisons between the two – perfect for store kiosks and the like.

This is sure to bring gaming to a new level as well. I’ve been playing this new game called "GemSweeper" and I for some reason have been touching my LCD as if it were a touchscreen while playing – how fun would it be to play games that are created in a way where a mouse and keyboard are no longer needed? Or how about games where 2 players sit across from one another…even for a game of virtual air hockey using a virtual puck?

I believe this is the future of computing. This will be, in my opinion, be available in every home one day. It will be a control point with smaller touchscreen versions that will be linked to a central server. From here, everything from online grocery shopping, managing environmental parameters, and video conferencing will be done. This is the digital life.  Granted it will take some time before it moves into the home. For now it is targeted for hotels, restaurants, and the sort and will be made available for purchase in Winter of 2007.

If you happen to be in New York, you can give Microsoft Surface a test drive (be sure to visit the offical Surface site for up to date info):

I was very excited about this multi-touch interface when I saw it over on hackaday.com. Nice somebody’s developing it into reality (and commented on it at Aximsite: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/). They still need to consider building this into a portable medium such as a tablet PC.

Whups. Try this link for the very short discussion on the tech demo at Aximsite:

It’s a $10,000 gimmick…

I actually did enjoy the demos etc, and it looks like a cool product – but definitely not consumer level. I can’t see this sitting in anyone’s home – not for a long time to come.

Did anyone else not how much this looks like OSX? Especially the little pop-up window on the maps demo…

Yeah…maybe in about 10-20 years the prices will drop and that will be my coffee table. That’s where I see it – one day. It’s the future alright…and it takes a long time to deploy technology and get it to prices at the consumer level.

I was very disappointed by the fact that this really seems like a concept gimmick more than anything else. I was expecting a more consumer based announcement.
