Handheld Market Takes Major Downturn

Shipments of handhelds are down 40% compared to the same quarter last year.  Is it any wonder?  Dell pulled out of the pda market because they saw the writing on the wall.  Heck, it’s all about convergence now.  Everybody wants smartphones and pdaphones.

In fact, has Palm introduced a handheld lately?  No, they haven’t since 2005!  They’re living off the Treo now.  I think the Treo comes in 20 different flavors, sort of like the Motorola Razr/Krazr thing.  But, I digress.

Hp is now one of the market leaders, but lookout, b/c the former supplier to the stars has decided to become a star themselves.  I speak, of course, of HTC, High Tech Computer.  They keep cranking out new, exciting, converged models.  they’re making me want to toss my vga Dell Axim x50v and spend up to $1000 on a glorified pda phone.  I don’t even care about the call quality or if it fits in my pocket.  They are giving me gadget fever.

So, you add a feature and the product is declared dead. Converged is the future of handhelds, not its extinction. Perhaps Standalone handhelds died when vendors added Bluetooth and WiFi? It’s wireless, isn’t it? Count the PDA and smart phones among the handhelds and you will find an increase in sales, not impending doom.
