What is Your Ideal MP3 Playa?

So for Mother’s Day, my wife told me I can’t blow her off this time.  Every year I wait until the last second and get her a crappy card and a last second gift that shows I put absolutely no thought whatsoever into it.  She’s raising three lunatic children, several pets, and working an important job, so she flat out told me I had to step up this year and be her man.

I was in trouble.  I watched Queer Eye, I searched high and low on the net, but had no ideas.  Flowers?  Bowling ball?  Candies?  Watch?  Personally, I wanted to get her some power tools.  That’s what she really needs.

Anywho, her hot milf divorced friend comes over in this gorgeous extended Chevy Trailblazer and Cheri fell in love.  With the truck.  So a couple days later, Cheri’s tired old minivan was at the dealership with a problem, and we were on the phone, and she was upset that her van had another nagging little problem.  I explained that it wasn’t a big deal, the van was paid off, la di da di da, yadda yadda, and we hung up.  Meanwhile, my cousin is the Sales Manager at the dealer, and he had a lightly used extended Trailblazer.  I made a deal with him to include a 10.2" DVD w/3 wireless headphones and an MP3 jack and brought it home without telling my wife.  And she has no MP3 playa.

I made her a beautiful card and surprised the heck outta her.  I scored mega husband points.  She thinks she is so cool driving a truck instead of a minivan!  We just brought the truck in yesterday to install the DVD and mp3 Jack, but she doesn’t know about the mp3 yet.

Next on my list is purchasing the mp3 playa.  Before we go further, put your hands in the Aya, if you’re a Playa!  Ok, how come my car has heated seats front and back, dual automatic climate contol, antilock brakes, rear backup sensors, and tons of other features, but it doesn’t have an mp3 jack or bluetooth?  Why is bluetooth not being adopted everywhere?  Must we still plug everything in?

My mp3 playa search was disappointing, to say the least.  I own an old iPod.  It’s a 2nd gen 20 Gig model.  It still works fine.  But I wanted to get my wife a flash based playa.  My music collection is 8 Gigs, but I probably only listen to half of it.  Ideally I’d like a flash player that has 8-10 Gigs capacity, with an SD card slot that can read either regular (up to 4 Gig) or high capacity SD cards (SDHC).  I also want a microSD slot.  Let’s add two headphone jacks as well.  And I want a nice, small form factor.  I think the Sandisk Sansa size is fine: 1.7 in. wide x 3.5 in. long x 0.5 in. high.  The screen only has to be large enough to show the name of the band and the song.  I don’t need to view photos or movies.  Who wants to view movies on a 1" screen?  That’s insane!  I’ll leave movies to smartphones or DVD players.

I don’t want any fancy mp3 software like iTunes for my perfect mp3 player.  I just want to use Windows Explorer to move music back and forth.  I want to create playlists in Windows Explorer or on my mp3 player.  Of course, it must have bluetooth.  It must have a rechargeable, user replaceable battery that lasts a long time between charges.  I don’t care for FM radio or voice recording.  I want it to be so easy to use that you don’t need instuctions, but the instuctions should be short and well written.  The 8 Gig BT model should cost $175.  And you should be able to subscribe to any music service you want to.

I ended up buying her the 6 Gig Sansa.  She’s getting that gift from our kids.  No frickin’ bluetooth!

Steve,

I have spent a lot of time playing with MP3 players, PMP’s and various other portable audio and video. One thing I have found is that none of them (with one or two rare exceptions) have BT.

My ideal playa would have at least 20GB HD, a nice big screen and be able to play audio, music, video, and picture slideshows. And I would love BT. Screw Wifi, give me BT.

Right now I have a Creative Zen Portable Media Center (the failed precurser to the Zune. I love the storage space it offers.

Oh and ideally, I want something slim so that I can slip it in my pocket.

You did good with the Sansa. :)

Mine would include an FM tuner, video support and many, many gigabytes of storage. I’m thinking 6 or 8 for a slim player, and at least 40 for a HDD-based player. Flash prices are coming way down; you can get a 16GB CompactFlash card for under $200 (after rebate) if you are careful. So, what I am saying here is that you will be getting 30GB players without moving parts pretty soon. Imagine, shock-resistant, low power-consumption, and slim, too! Just be sure to include an FM tuner. HD radio would be a plus, but I not aware of any digital music players that support that yet. Oh, and the more formats that the player supports, the better (wmv, mp3, ogg, aac, flac, speex, etc etc). Also, include a voice recorder. And if you build WiFi into the thing, for criminy’s sake, make it possible to surf your online store from the device! sheesh!
