Have you heard of Gizmo Call beta? I ran into it today when I was searching for ways to send / receive SMS messages on the computer. The Gizmo Project, a Skype alternative that was mentioned sometime ago when we introduced its capabilities to be coupled with Grand Central, is the parent company to Gizmo Call. Gizmo Call beta features a "Free Local Numbers" feature which allows users to receive a local number to call back to the PC Gizmo Call user which could amount to considerable savings. The downside is that this early beta of the "Free Local Numbers" only terms local as within a country which is rather useless for United States users. You can make free calls to any landline for 5 minutes each day or 10 minutes if you are a registered Gizmo member. Additional call time can be purchased and airtime is charged based on the number dialed.

Gizmo also offers GizmoSMS, a free SMS sending feature to phones in around 60 countries.
