Review: Spb Phone Suite – Everything Microsoft Missed?

What is it?

Spb Phone Suite is the newest offering from Spb Software House and it is designed to make your Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 based phone function the way it should have. Okay, maybe that’s going a bit far but really that’s a large part of the goal. Spb sells one of the most popular Windows Mobile add-on software packages – Spb Pocket Plus. Spb Pocket Plus adds a lot of missing functionality to Windows Mobile and over time they’ve received a lot of feedback from users that were looking to fill in some gaps with the phone side of WM5. Rather than force these add-on bits to "classic" PDA users, Spb decided to create a whole new application to extend the phone based user experience.

Installation

Realistically, this as with 99% of Windows Mobile software is a non-event. Typical of Spb you will find in the downloads section the availability of an executable (desktop based) or a cab (ota based) install package. Pick the one that’s best for you and let the good times roll. Please note: the install does require a soft-reset of the device at the end so make sure you’ve saved everything you wish to keep prior to running the package.

What’s it do?

Glad you asked!!

PROFILES: Spb Phone Suite includes probably one of the one most missed features in Windows Mobile, and one of the most basic of features – phone profiles. There’s a lot of default options, but there is also the ability to create your own special profile.

CALL FILTERING: My favorite option! I’m not one of those "if my phone rings I have to answer it" kind of people. Actually 9 out of 10 times when my phone rings whomever is calling ends up hearing my friendly voice asking them to leave a message. The exact opposite of most of my friends, but I’ve always been a little different. What really makes this my favorite feature is that I can choose whom actually gets through to my phone both by black-list and white list. The only thing I think that’s missing here is to have it automagically whitelist your contacts. Unfortunately at this time you have to manually select who is on the whitelist.

MISSED NOTIFICATIONS: Here was another "duh" moment for Windows Mobile. And another gotta have… Missed notiffications. Granted WM notifies you when you miss a call/sms but if you don’t hear the initial notification, you are not going to get a second one. With Spb Phone Suite that’s no longer a problem. Spb shows this as little gem as "missed call notifications" but it’s not just for calls:

TODAY PLUGIN: While all the shots above are interesting, this is really what you’re going to see the most of in Spb Phone Suite. Included with the today plugin is a photo-dialing option, counters for missed calls & sms, email, voicemail, as well as the "radio" controls and profiles. The photo dialing can be easily configured by going to the settings (start/settings/system) or by tap and hold on the dialer area. If you’re like me and don’t have a lot of photo contacts spb has kindly included a few icons for you!

Wrap-Up

Alright, let’s bring this to a close. Spb Phone Suite quite honestly was something I wondered if I would find a use for. I didn’t bother to read the documentation prior to accepting the review copy from Doug… but I’m really glad I said I’d try it out. This program rocks!! For being a first time (version 1) offering from Spb you can really tell the beta testers worked their butts off to make it a solid app right out of the gates.  There’s a few more options hidden in the program that I haven’t touched on – things like drop call with sms response - that continue to add even more value to this app, so I highly recommend if you own a PPC based (WM5 or WM6) phone you head on over to Spb Software House and give this new app a try.

Cool!

Finally, I can control my WM5 phone the way I could control my Symbian phone!

Now I’m curious. What did the Symbian based phone do that WM5 didn’t? Is there anything Spb missed that they should’v added?

I’ve not used a Symbian device for more than about 10 minutes so the more info the better~!

I joined the beta testing for this fairly late in the process but I honestly couldn’t find anything to get excited about. I bought Spb Mobile Shell shortly after it was released and it already has most of the features of this app. I use O2 Plus for profiles and it’s a lot more feature filled than the Phone Suite profiles applet.

It’s a gross understatement to say that “white-listing” each and every one of my clients, friends, and family does not appeal.

There was one tiny feature that I don’t have in any other app which was nice: on my call log it showed contact photos. Nice feature but not worth 2MB of my storage.

Melvyn, what do you mean by white listing?

Brandon’s review points out the flaw in the “Call Filtering” feature:

“The only thing I think that’s missing here is to have it automagically whitelist your contacts. Unfortunately at this time you have to manually select who is on the whitelist.”

Whitelisting is the opposite of blacklisting.

When you blacklist you keep that person from being able to ring your phone. Whitelisting is only allowing certain persons to be able to ring you. Sort of like a pre-approved caller list. Everyone else goes straight to voicemail.

I understand the concept perfectly. Your review makes clear the point that if you want to whitelist you’re going to have to spend a long time setting up the list.

Meanwhile…. there’s another review at pocketnow:
http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=946

That reviewer points out a couple of features I missed in my brief play and I’m tempted to reinstall to have another experiment with the app. I like the timed/scheduled profile switching. It’s something I’ve wanted for a long time and which (in my experience) is buggy and unreliable in O2 Plus.

The “Call reject with SMS message” feature looks good but AFAIK it’s in the free Mobile Secretary app from Microsoft. Since Mobile Secretary is already in my ROM, I’ll save nothing by uninstalling it.

Brandon,

For UIQ2 there was an application called MagicProfiles Pro that let you:

Create multiple profiles (like up to 11 of them).

Each profile allowed customization of:

ring and alarm tones and volume
use of white and/ or blacklists
fully automated SMS response to the activated list and all other callers
scheduling of profile changes
automated profile change based on location (cell tower ID)
automated profile changes based on key words or symbols in agenda entries (I used *f in my calendar to trigger flight mode and *m to trigger silent mode for scheduled meetings)
bluetooth status
radio (phone) status
and multiple other settings

What Phone Suite is missing is integration of what it offers (profile, blacklist, sms response…). That is what Magic Profiles is so good at. What pS does offer that MP didn’t is backlight settings (you couldn’t get there with Symbian 7.x, over which UIQ2.x was laid).

I have emailed my suggestions to SPB.

Regarding what Symbian phones do/ did that WM phones didn’t/ don’t. Ha! You’re kidding, right?

Simply put, Symbian Phones – 4 years ago – did what WM5 phones do now and what Palm phones never did. That said, the gap has closed tremendously in terms of stability and capabilities. Since there are no Symbian offerings with a keyboard that support the US 3G bandwidths, it is a WM5 phone for me now. But, my 8525 doesn’t particularly do more than my 4-year old P910a did – multi-media apps not withstanding. One huge advantage that WM phones have, though is better integration/ synchronization w/ Outlook.

I love these “my old device did everything your newfangled plaything dreams of” type post. Makes me reminisce about my Psion 5mx which had a word processor that is still ahead of the current Windows Mobile crop of WP apps. The database on that device also had speed, stability, and usability that more “modern” db apps can only wish for. Also, both of those fine applications were pre-installed. Ah the past……

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Psions… never owned one. Seems everyone who did loved them.

Richard … thanks for the info.

Have you looked at the new offering from SBSH – PhoneWeaver?

Seems like it has some profiles power!!!

I hope Spb can develop a tool like O2′s Dial Wizard for IIi (run Win98SE). I don’t like the Dial Wizard for O2 WM5 because many good features are missing. I would be more than happy to share what is good about O2 IIi Dial Wizard, please email me. Thank you.

ops, sorry, a typo in my previous message, I meant Win2003SE, not 98SE.

some of the O2 IIi Dial Wizard features:
O2 Dial Wizard – Introduction

The O2 Dial Wizard is an easy-to-use dialer application that cuts down on the number of steps needed to make a local or overseas call. It enables faster and simpler dialling from your O2 device. With this application, you no longer need to store the same phone number in different formats with different dial prefixes to make a call from your Contacts database. There is also no need for you to key in a long list of prefix digits like calling card numbers, PIN and access numbers to make a call using a calling card. The O2 Dial Wizard does it all for you. All you have to do is to locate the contact name from the dial pad and press the Dial Wizard key. Dial Wizard will call up all the necessary dialing sequence.

This software is provided to you ‘As Is’ and does not come with any warranties, expressed or implied. As such, we do not guarantee that it will be non-infringing, free from glitches, or suitable for sale.

How to download
If you have already registered your Xda IIs, Xda II mini, Xda IIi, please use “O2 Connect” on your device to download O2 Dial Wizard.

What do Symbian phones give you that WM phones don’t? An archaic, unintuitive, hard to use interface that you spend more time learning than actually using. WM works the same way as your desktop PC (same general layout as Windows and any other modern GUI-based OS) so if you can use your desktop PC, you can use a WM phone. Everyone knows what a Start button is.

Symbian? Very pretty screen. Bugger me if you can actually find anything useful on the damned things. Plus, virtually none of them come with a touch-screen, so you’re forced to use the navigation pad to move around.
