Emotive announces "Push Ringer"
Welcome to the land of all your ringer are belong to me. Or maybe this is the land of stupid crap to annoy your friends with. Or maybe it’s the land of “if you make me listen to Boy George one more time when you call me I’m going to come over there and kick your a$$“!!!
Emotive’s flagship product, the patent-pending “Push Ringer”, reverses the common ringtone model. It enables a caller to push an outgoing ringtone to the receiving phone allowing the caller, not the called person, to set the tone. The chosen Ringer is transmitted to the recipient’s handset and temporarily overrides the phone’s pre-set ringer. The ringers can comprise audio, video, animations, avatars or flash files. Closing the loop, if the called person likes the ringtone, the service also enables him or her to instantly buy a copy of the ringtone for his or her own phone.
Forgive me for this one… but I’ve got some friends going through “issues” in their lives that seem to require them to replace the normal ringing sound that I as a caller have with some stupid “I want to cry because you left me type” song. I’ve also got some friends that have very different musical tastes than I do… so what really makes a company think that I WANT my ringtone replaced by something someone else feels like shoving on me? I can see it now - I go to meeting (and as usual forget to turn of my ringer) and my buddy thinks it will be funny to replace my ring tone with “Smack My Bitch Up” from Prodigy. Can anyone see the problem with that?!
I seriously hope this is a “feature” that I’ll be able to in some way block. The last thing I need is someone to send me a ringtone that will get me fired or worse in the dog-house with my wife because someone decides to prank me from some girl’s phone with a “let’s get nekkid” ringtone.
No mention in the press release if this will require some kind of data plan from your provider either since we all know data rates out-of-plan can bankrupt you in no time.
I can’t wait to see the fires this thing starts!
** On a side note, it seems this application has already grown fairly popular with the Skype crowd. 800,000 installs since it’s launch in 2006. Very impressive… I had no idea there were that many people who had My Space pages and Skype.

I’ve done some further research and am reliably informed that this is an “opt-in” service where you opt-in to the entire service. The company are apparently facing pressure from users that want it switched to an “opt-in per song”. Personally, I don’t give a damn as long as I have a simple way to outright express my complete lack of desire for this absurd notion.
JKOntheRun has an excellent opinion piece on this over here:

He argues about the undemocratic nature of someone else deciding how my phone rings.

Well that’s reaally good to know. As long as I choose if someone gets to send me a ringtone I could care less who else uses the services..
Thanks for the link to JKOTR – I saw his post a while after I made this one and was quite surprise how close our arguements were for now having this junk pushed to us.
Thanks again for the heads up on this new “service” …
