Mosio Project – Enhanced SMS

themosioproject_logo_web

The Mosio Project has bundled all of the SMS tools/services we thought would be great and instead of charging for each one, we decided to give people unlimited access to all of them for $.99 per week (subscriptions are $3.95/month). Plus, Mosio uses a "contextual contributions" socially responsible business model where $.25 of each monthly subscription is donated to technology and engineering projects through organizations like Engineers Without Borders and Wherever The Need.

3 Favorite Tools:

  • QnA
  • Lost Phone
  • My Mosio

1) QnA – this is like AskMeNow or any of those other question answering services, but you don’t pay per question. Instead your questions get sent to other Mosio Members (called QnAgents) who have offered to answer questions whenever they’re at their computers. It’s basically a community-based mobile answering service with 3 guidelines:
+ Please ask only questions that can be quickly answered by someone with an internet connection.
+ If you are near an internet connection, don’t ask QnA questions, help answer them!
+ Ask a smart ass question, expect a smart ass answer.

2) Lost Phone – If you lose your phone, this one has you log into your account and it will send a customized text message to your phone saying "THIS PHONE IS LOST – WHEN FOUND CALL _______" or another, ahem, more "colorful" message, if you suspect it has been stolen. :) Definitely a tool one hopefully never needs to use, but it’s there just in case.

3) MyMosio – This tool allows you to create your own keywords/responses as well as publish a SMS text newsletter (aka "TextCasts") to those who subscribe from their phones. They do not need to be Mosio members and can subscribe to MyMosio TextCasts for free. Besides the SMS blog, couponing and marketing ways it can be used, there’s also a social networking aspect to it where you can ping in and find out where you’re friends are and what they’re doing when you’re out and about. MyMosio can be used so a parent can check up and see where a child is by pinging their MyMosio account and getting a response. It allows the parents to be "in the know" while giving kids some space.

There are dozens more things you can do with Mosio and you can find more information about the project at www.mosio.com

And to be clear, it’s not free, it’s $3.95/month, which is damn near free. Little elves are cool. :)

$3.95/mo isn’t anywhere near free. When I already pay $100 per month for service data sms the last thing (I personally) want to do is pay another four bucks a month for someone else to use google for me :P

If I’m totally missing something here … clue me in!!!

i guess i meant free for individual services and bits of information, as in you don’t get charged per question or per search or per joke, etc. when you pay the monthly charge, which basically comes out to pennies per use. try googling from your phone: What were the total first weekend box office receipts for Braveheart? or What is the line-up of this year Sasquatch Music Festival in WA? or How many fights occurred in the NHL last year? and i doubt you will get anything back. and that is just for the QNA function, which i use ALL the time.

knowledge is power, and i am kicking butt! :)

Sounds like you probably have everything you need, Brandon, but if you want to check it out, email me and I’ll hook you up for “real” free.

Of course, I’m biased, but having a gaggle of helpful smart asses look up things for me when i’m away from my computer is well worth $4 a month.

@James … I see your point. I guess when I’m out an about I tend to need simple stuff like “Where the heck is Chili’s??!!!” Along with that 95% of the time (because I’m directionally challenged) I will map it out on google/mapquest prior to getting in the car. You bring up some excellent points though about being able to get the answer to completely random thoughts very quickly.

@Noel … that’s a very generous offer, and is greatly appreciated. Let me go a couple days and see how many random thoughts/questions I come up with while I’m offline and see if it seems worth a trial.

Right on, Brandon. I’ve found going out and having a few drinks with friends usually produces a few claims that need to be confirmed. :)

Have a great weekend and let me know.

So I’ve thought about it and it seems like a great concept. I wouldn’t use a lot of the features given the kind of device I use … but I can definitely see how someone with a non-smart device (like a Razr) would highly benefit from the service.

Looks like you would really want an unlimited (or fairly high number) text account to make full use of the service. Unfortunately I traded an unlimited texting account for my unlimited data plan.

Anyway, You’re right – the price is definitely justifyable for what the service does. If you don’t have the internet this just might be the next best thing.

Looks like good service.

Jack, it sure is. People answer the QnA’s lightning fast. I’ve had a hard time trying to answer one…in time as only the first 2 responses are forwarded to the person who asked the question. I haven’t had a chance still to try out the other features as I don’t have a text plan.
