The Ultimate Driving Experience

Have you ever driven a car with a Heads Up Display (HUD)?  This technology displays information onto the windshield of a car that is projected from below it.  GM has utilized this technology more than other manufacturers.  Usually you’ll see information such as speed, compass direction, and even radio station.

Originally, this technology was developed in the 70′s for fighter aircraft.

Now the future of automotive instrumentation might go back to heads up displays.  A group of venture capitalists is looking for a team of engineers to develop a prototype within three years to pitch to automakers, according to Businessweek.  This prototype will include features in the HUD such as email.  "You can stare straight ahead with hands at the wheel to drive and check e-mail at the same time.  That’s vastly safer than drivers looking down and taking one or both hands off the wheel to play with their BlackBerry."  According to Jonathon Fram and Howard Schultz, investors.

Alright, I can see using a HUD with a good GPS navigation system, but reading email while driving is just asking for flaming, 20-car pile-ups. How about text-to-speech email? At least the driver’s eyes would not be distracted by that. Most people can’t even handle adjusting the radio without swerving.
