Sprint’s Wireless Service to Speed Up Bigtime

At CTIA, Qualcomm, the maker of the EVDO chipsets that phone companies such as Sprint use, announced new hardware and software updates that will radically upgrade the bandwidth speed.  In theory, EVDO Rev A, that is in use currently, promises speeds up to 3.2 Mbps (see my previous article).  The Rev B will triple the speed to 9.3Mbps.

“The evolution of CDMA2000 networks from EVDO Rev. A to EVDO Rev. B allows network operators to remain leading-edge in their service and performance offerings without the need for any infrastructure hardware changes,”  said Qualcomm CEO Dr. Sanjay K. Jha.

The software update for the older EVDO hardware will be available by week’s end.  The new hardware will be rolled out by the end of the year.  Sprint and Verizon should upgrade their networks soon after.
