HTC announces a Vista-equipped UMPC, the Shift.
Posted by: PocketBrain on Mar 26 2007High Tech Computer corporation announced their foray into the UMPC market with the new Shift, a UMPC that will run Microsoft’s Vista operating system.
The Shift features a unique, slide/tilt QWERTY keyboard design that can be used in either of two different positions (flat or tilted) or simply stored by sliding the keyboard back behind the screen (akin to other UMPC’s and PPC phones). This gives the operator more options for input. You can either use it like a PDA with its touchscreen input, type flat like a PDA phone, or tilt the screen and touch type — if you have very small fingers.
Also included is an impressive connectivity package, with 3G support, and tri-Band UMTS/HSDPA, Quad-Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi. I challenge you to find a spot on this green Earth where you will not be able to connect to the World Wide Web.
It will include a 30GB hard drive, a 7-inch widescreen touch display, and Windows Vista. Did I mention that it comes with Vista? Impressive! HTC is aiming at the laptop-replacement UMPC market here, as it is sure to have plenty horsepower under the hood to accomodate the new OS. And all this packed in an area the size of "a couple of DVD cases."
HTC says the Shift will be available in the third quarter of 2007.

Price? Or did I miss that?
Brandon, according to HTC’s website, the price is, “if you need to ask, then you can’t afford it.”
Seriously, the pricing has not been announced yet.
Doug
I already knew I couldn’t afford it… but I thought just in case someone else could I’d ask. Unless it’s $500 or less it’s not likely to be on my radar.
Yeah, my radar is much smaller than yours right now.
Something tells me it will be way out of reach for both of us, but a nice pipe dream.
Doug
Hey, if it is reasonably priced and can support Vista’s Aero, I just may make it my mission in life to acquire one. It would trump laptop, tablet, and PDA. Just hook it up to a USB hub with keyboard, mouse, printer, and external storage to make it a desktop replacement. Of course, I have to assume much as I have not seen all the specs yet.
