Samsung has recently released a software update for the BlackJack, which is recommended to be installed. This update should enhance roaming capabilities, especially Internationally. In addition, there are cosmetic user interface changes (several icons have been changed) contained within the update. The update will take about 10 minutes to complete if the system is already set up."

According to Smartphone Thoughts, this WM5 ROM upgrade is 51MB and to download it, make sure you keep your pop-up blockers disabled lest you miss the EULA popup window for the download. This update will result in your device being hard reset! – Please remember to backup your data.

Lastly, CrunchGear has a step by step procedure on how to get Cingular to unlock your phone:

I couldn’t find much on the Web about it, so I thought I’d write up a comprehensive post about my experience unlocking the phone.

I called Cingular’s International Care Center at (916) 843-4685 Tuesday morning and spoke with a customer service representative, who confirmed that I could unlock all my Cingular phones for international travel. To unlock my Blackjack, I read him my International Mobile Equipment Identity, or IMEI, number, which can be found on the product box or by entering the code *#06# on the Blackjack’s keypad.

After I read him the IMEI, he processed it through the computer and gave me an unlock code specific to my phone. He then instructed me to power down my phone, take out the Subscriber Identification Module, or SIM, card and power it back up. Once the phone rebooted, I entered in the code #7465625*638*, which brought up the prompt: Enter Network Control Key. I put in my unlock code, and the phone returned the message: Successfully Disable Locking Status.

plinion, Samsung was pretty clear that this rom upgrade is not WM6. That may be coming soon, however, we’ll keep watching.

Does this procedure unlock the phone?
Do you have 1st hand experience of doing this and getting it right?

The update procedure does not unlock the phone.

If you call Cingular and you qualify to have your device “unlocked” they will walk you through the unlock procedure. It’s fairly painless.

I do not have any 1st hand experience and as Brandon has said, the unlock procedure is through Cingular.
