The hot rumor has the "Gphone" being worked on by Google’s hot new team, hired away from T-Mobile’s Sidekick team.   They’ve also been talking nice to a few mobile operators.  But the Managing Director of Sales and Operations, Richard Kimbler, said, "At this point in time, we are very focused on the software, not the phone."

On the other hand, Isabel Aguilera, Google’s Director-General in Spain and Portugal, has confirmed that the company has been developing a cell phone.  "A part of the time our engineers we have devoted to the investigation of a mobile phone to access information."

She went on to point out the potential role of a portable search enable cell phone in atypical environments.

Looks like we have some crosstalk between the separate Google Directors.
