Linutop, a Linux-based diskless computer.
Linutop.com is now producing the Linutop Linux-based diskless computer. Using the AMD Geode LX700 (1.3W) processor at 433 MHz and 256 MB on-board, it runs Xubuntu Linux distribution on a USB thumb drive (included). It also will run with other Linux distros, such as Ubuntu, Mandriva, Slackaware, Puppy Linux, and other thin clients and file servers. Since the Geode is an x86 derivitive, it should get along quite nicely with almost any software that will run in a Linux x86 distribution.
Its creators see it being used for everyday internet usage at home, businesses, Libraries, Schools, Hotels, Hospitals, and Internet cafés. They also see it being used in kiosks, point-of-sales terminals, and imbeded in your vehicle. Imagine running a GPS navigation and multimedia programs with it.
Stats:
- AMD Geode LX700 CPU.
- 256 MB RAM (non-upgradeable).
- 4x USB 2.0 ports.
- Audio in and out.
- 100baseT Ethernet port.
- VGA output (1660 x 1200 pixels max).
- Size: 9.3 x 2.7 x 15 cm (3.66 x 1.06 x 5.91 in).
- Weight, 280 g (9.88 oz).
- Power: DC in 9V 1.5A.
- Comes with a 1GB thumb drive with the OS installed.
- AC/DC 9V adapter included (US adapter not yet available)
Software:
- xubuntu optimized for Lintop
- Firefox (web browser)
- GAIM (instant messaging)
- Abiword (word processor)
Availability is in Europe right now, coming to the US soon. Current version does not have any flash ROM built in, but future versions may have an internal USB port for installing a thumb drive (which would be upgradeable, of course). I could see using a fast card reader and one of the now-inexpensive (just over $200) 12GB CF cards with this. Bulk storage could be done easily with an external hard drive.
It’s portable, but not yet mobile. I can see Ben Heckendorn getting ahold of this and fitting it with a battery and touchscreen or keyboard. It would be nice to hack this together with the touchscreen for a Linux UMPC DIY.
