Samsung UMPC Round 2

Samsung is having another go at the UMPC.  The first version, reviewed by our own Doug, was wonderfully small, but not extremely useful.  It was too large to be put in a pocket like a PDA, and too small to use as a laptop.  There were too many comprimises too really make it work at the high price it was offered at.

Will the second edition, dubbed the Q2, deliver improved benefits?  They increased the resolution to 1024 x 600 WSVGA, increased the RAM to 1GB, added a 60GB hard drive and Vista Home Premium.  They also have put in a front mounted VGA camera for video conferencing and a rear mounted camera for photos.  Battery life is 4 hours, or up to 6.5 with the optional extended battery.  They’ve tossed in many other options as well.

The unit still has only a software keyboard, making text entry difficult.  Many UMPCs have slide out keyboards ala the OQO.  This could be a negative.  Pricing has not been announced, but it’s hoped it will start coming down.

Nice job, Steve.

I noticed it also has a thumb keyboard on either side of the screen. That is very intriguing.

Looks much nicer than the Q1, which I wouldn’t exactly call “wonderfully small,” at least not next to the Sony UX models. The Q2 has a hardware thumb-board placed on either side of the screen, not just a software keyboard, so you’re not required to use screen real-estate for your text input. It makes more efficient use of its front surface. I’m estimating 8.8″ by 4.8″ by .95″ size, compare to the Q1 at 9.0″(w) x 5.5″(H) x 1.0″(D). 1.54 lb. vs. the Q1’s slightly more hefty 1.7 lb.
