Dell Phone Rumors & Axim’s Upcoming Demise Confirmed
Big day for Dell rumors and some very sad news for Axim lovers if confirmed.
Gizmodo is reporting on rumors (via mobilementalism.com) that Dell will be looking at entering the PDA / smartphone market with their recent ex-Motorola exec hire leading the way. These have been around since the day the Motorola hotshot was hired.
Chris Leckness, the founder / commissioner at Aximsite – is reporting a conversation he’s had with Dell today, during which it was confirmed that, in relation to the flagship Axim line of PDAs, "Once the current Dell Axim offerings are gone, they are gone."
If that proves true, this will be very sad news for the many, many Axim lovers out there. The Axim line has consistently been sold at hugely attractive prices, has a very loyal following, and in the X50 / X51 series, has essentially had the market leading device for a couple of years now. In fact many have argued that the reason Dell hadn’t come out with a new model yet, is that nobody had yet come with anything that beat the Axim X51 series!
I’ve owned an Axim X50V and still do own an X51V. They are great standalone PDA devices – even though I no longer use it as my everyday workhorse.
Here’s hoping that Dell will now enter the converged / PDA smartphone device market and bring us some devices that live up to the standards of the Axim line.
Here’s also hoping that all of us Axim owners will now remember to treat them with extra-special tender loving care from here on out.

Hopefully, they will have a fire sale with their current units and I can pick up an X51V. And hopefully, they will switch to PDA/phone or UMPC.

Fire sale would be nice, as the X51Vs are so worthwhile. And yeah, I would so much like to see them bring out a converged phone device and a UMPC …

Wow, I was really hoping that the rumors were untrue. Well, my warranty expires in March, trying to think if I should get extended warranty from Dell for my current x51v unit. Makes me think, what would happen for warranty replacements when the current stock is depleted?
A fire sale would be cool.

I saw this over at Aximsite. Ya beat me to the punch.
A Dell coverged device would be nice, but I think it is a long shot.

This news not only spells the demise of the Axim, but also pretty much the demise of the standalone pocket pc… Once HP is through with theirs, there will be none left.
Hope there is a fire sale here in Singapore.
