WM6…Underneath the Shiny New Exterior

One of the big announcements that came with Windows Mobile 6 was that it would include the ability to natively edit fully formatted Word documents.  This came as big news to both of the Mobile Word users who were still trying to figure out why their fonts were getting messed up when they synced their devices.

Seriously, this was big news for everyone who swaps files between their desktop and mobile device.  But that’s not all…wait…apparently, yes it is.  According to WMExperts, if you purchase Windows Mobile 6 Standard (what we commoners would refer to as the Smartphone version), you will be able to edit documents but not create them in Mobile Word.  What does this mean?  I have no idea.  It could mean that Microsoft is putting a big push on Windows Mobile Professional, which is the most converged of the converged operating systems.  WM 6 Professional allows you to both edit and create Word documents.  Sure, there are plenty of considerably less nefarious scenarios.  Maybe the developers just needed to make space for more important functions.  But who are we kidding…my explanation is way more enticing.  Get your gossip columns started…the sheen is starting to wear off and WM 6 has not even been released yet.
