Your favorite vendor just launched an iPhone Killer!!!!

Well woo dee hoo!!! That’s all I see anymore. Pictures, screenshots, concepts, Korean model phones, you name it. We get a new iPhone killer every day of the week.

BUT!!!! … It’s not just all about putting a pretty touch screen on a phone and calling it an iPhone killer. There’s a reason why this stuff is imporant, and there’s a reason why we still need to mention each and every one of these new devices that break the mold.

The thing that for me defines the iPhone more than anything else … more than the screen size, more than the thickness, more than widgets, gidgets and gadgets, is the attempt at innovation. The bloody innovation people. Who gives two flying farts if Spb (whom I love by the way so no offense) makes 10 different applications that do X or Y – the fact is they cost me money and they DON’t FIX the problems in the underlying operating system. They cover them up with different functionality and in most cases much better functionality. Sure I can pay $30 for Opera mobile – BUT why the hell should I HAVE to in order to have a decent web browsing experience out of the box??!!! Yes, the iPhone’s web browsing experience out and about on the street is going SUCK BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T INCLUDE 3G (yes Apple I’m yelling at you) but atleast when you fire up wifi you’ll have a full version Safari web browser. Which if as functional as the macbook version will make a lot of people (like me) who think PIE sucks very happy.

More after the break

Microsoft hasn’t changed squat when it comes to Windows Mobile in a long time. Sure, they’ve made modest improvements, I love the two soft keys in WM5 (which are by the way not an innovation but the same functionality as the old PPC new menu), I love push email (Thanks RIM), … um … I’m sorry I’m drawing a blank. Has anything REALLY changed in the last 6 years? My Casio e-125 (minus the availability of software anymore) is just as applicable and functional today as it was the day it came out. It could play video, it could play music, PIE still sucked, you could theme it (Snoopsoft Dashboard), it kept track of the same stuff then as it can now.

We’ve all seen the Motorola interface. We’ve all clicked down on the navigational pad for the address book and to be honest there’s only so many times you can do that before it becomes mundane. I mean seriously… MOTOROLA – IT’S TIME FOR AN OS REDESIGN. From the most basic phone (say an older v220) to the most recent Razr, the core OS and functionality is the fricking same. Thinner shape, same address book – ZERO innovation. Has it changed at all since the Motorola Peanut? Ok, sorry yes it has. They added color.

If you’re still reading this you’re either a Glenn Beck fan (whom I also love because he’s different) or your just into rants. Either way I hope you see my point. For those that have missed it, here’s the non- rant version:

I love the iPhone, not because I’m an Apple fanboy, but because it represents a possible transition in the ho-hum do the same in a new case current cell phone and PDA market. I love the iPhone not for what it is or what it will be, i love it because it represents a need and a desire for innovation from the big players in the market. Microsoft, Motorola, Samsung, Nokia, HTC, etc… whether they admit it or not publicly are taking notice and thinking of ways to bring out something to steal Apple’s thunder. I want the iPhone to come to market for one reason only – innovation.

Sure we see a new iPhone killer everyday – but we are seeing something more important everyday than just the iPhone – we are seeing innovation.

/end rant.

First the screaming “BUT why the hell should I HAVE to in order to have a decent web browsing experience out of the box??!!! Yes, the iPhone’s web browsing experience out and about on the street is going SUCK BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T INCLUDE 3G”
and then, just like that
“More after the break”

So funny :p

Also, if people stopped reading your post at the break, they don’t even see the non- rant version. :D

But anyway, I agree with your point. ;)

Yea … that’s the problem with having to share webspace with my fellow jammers – I have to leave some room on the front page for others :)

Beside’s I have it on very good authority (PatrickJ) that my rants get read end to end … Ok fine, truth be told he’s the only one who reads them LOL
