Meet DAVE. Your New Best Friend In Mobile Data Storage

Posted by: dgoldring on Feb 02 2007

Have you ever run out of space on your PDA, with too many documents and programs? Or perhaps you have exhausted your last couple of precious megabytes with pictures of family and friends on your camera phone? Have no fear, DAVE is here! Well, almost…

I introduce to you, D.A.V.E. (Digital Audio Video Experience), Seagate’s new portable hard drive with USB, integrated Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth capabilities. Available in 10GB and 20GB variants in May/June 2007, this spiffy little device will cost around $150-179 at time of launch.

In the PodTech broadcast, Andy Horwitz claims that "it will take mobile entertainment to a whole new level". With its wireless options these devices can even communicate with and swap files between other D.A.V.E. units, as well as a plethora of other devices, such as: laptops, PDAs, mobile phones, PSP, Nintendo DS, and anything else that can connect to a wireless network either via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Seagate will also make software APIs readily available to developers by the end of March to empower them with the ability to write programs that can interface with D.A.V.E.

With Seagate’s longtime expertise in manufacturing hard drives, the D.A.V.E. also has some very nice safety features, including drop protection. With a drop of just 11cm, the heads of the drive move off the drive platters. If the situation intensifies, then the drive heads will lock to the side with a drop of only 31cm, thereby preventing any possible damage.

What about power? Seagate claims (according to Enterprise IT Planet) that the D.A.V.E. can sustain up to 10 hours of operation with its rechargeable lithium-ion battery and up to 14 hours in standby in which it can still receive Bluetooth commands. Not bad at all.

So, now the question remains: What would you do with an additional 20GB of portable space?

For more information, check out the Press Release from SeaGate.

Aw man, and I was so proud when I built an external power source for my WL-HDD. This is a LOT smaller than that 2.5″ HDD-based system. Does it use a 1.8″ platter drive?

Or … do what I do and get you a handy dandy WD Mybook (I’ve got the 350GB version) and set it up as a shared drive on your system. Then sprinkle in a little Resco File Explorer or your favorite file explorer wifi and have 350GB of storage available.

True this can’t follow you around like the little guy can but the price is nearly identical for 15 times the storage capacity.

PS: I got around the whole problem of not taking it with me by setting up an FTP site that I can access from the Internet. Not as fast as local access - but my data is there when I needed it and no secondary devices to carry around.

Brandon. That is way to technical for me. I just bought a 120 GB portable drive that I can hook up to whatever I need.

I don’t. I plug both my Axim and the drive into my laptop. I have my laptop with me almost everywhere I go anyway.

With my wireless HDD, I just need a power source, and I can access it through WiFi. Right now, it’s a network store, plugged into my router, with the radio off. Something like this would be wayyyy more convenient; it’s pocketable and has a built-in battery. And Bluetooth, in addition to WiFi.
