RealNetworks Releases Mobile Version of RealPlayer…Nobody Notices

One of the questions I get all of the time is how to play Real formatted (as in RealPlayer) media on the Pocket PC.  My initial response is always the same, "why?"  Real format is well known to be inferior to most other video formats available.  Nonetheless, RealPlayer from RealNetworks, Inc. has been increasing in popularity, and many people using it on their desktops want to transfer this content to their mobile devices.

Until now, you could not transfer Real formatted media to your mobile device without converting it into MP3, WMV, or another mainstream video format.  That all has changed.  Earlier this week, RealNetworks announced the release of the Real One Player for mobile devices.  It allows you to play the full spectrum of Real audio and Real video stream formats. There is a official release and a beta version 1.1 which supports RealVideo 9 as well.

That’s great! I’m really looking forward to this. There are quite a few sermons that I have that are only available in Real format and converting is a pain. I look forward to trying out this player!

Not true … I totally noticed. But since there’s been a version floating around for ever (search aximsite) I figured it wasn’t worth mentioning.

That and very few people use Real for anything anymore, so honestly I never gave it a second thought.

Like I said, I get asked about this a lot. I never knew it was out there until the other day when I saw it on Freeware PPC. I agree with you, Brandon, I woudl not recommend this format, but it seems to be used by a lot of people nonetheless.

I like to think of this personally as a “legacy” format. But it’s still needed as during the older times some people really utilised this format quite a bit and converting formats would result in some generation loss hence the desire to view that format straight.
