Some Sensible Name Changes In Store for Windows Mobile 6 Versions
Via: Engadget Mobile
According to a piece in Engadget Mobile today, the upcoming new Windows Mobile 6 – or Crossbow – will have some major changes to the naming convention for the various versions or flavors of it.
The rumored changes are:
- Smartphone version will become ‘Standard’
- Pocket PC version will be ‘Classic’
- Pocket PC Phone Edition will become ‘Professional’
I know some will say the new version titles are pretty drab and unimaginative, but I like them …. a lot.![]()
I like them because I think by now there is so much ‘bleed over’ between terms like PDA and Pocket PC and Smartphone and all these sorts of devices, that losing the Pocket PC element within the version names is very worthwhile.
Most of all though I like them because it is way past time that ‘Smartphone’ ceased to be in any way associated with an OS version, and can more happily (as it already is) be used as a generic for a whole genre of devices (and there’ll still be plenty to debate as far as defining exactly what makes one).
Particularly for novice users and buyers, dropping the Smartphone title should save a lot of confusion. Bravo for boring, unexciting version names.

I think the change makes a little more sense to those not used to Windows Mobile.
Personally I had my heart set on them using my naming scheme:
Non-Phone Edition = WM6 Playground Pimp Edition
Smartphone Edition = WM6 Corner Hustler Edition
Phone Edition w/Touchscreen = WM6 Drug Cartel Edition aka “Say hello to my little friend” Edition.
I prefer the Drug Cartel Edition myself. Top of the food chain. LOL!

At least they didn’t call it:
Junior, Donkey Kong, and King Kong editions respectively. ^_^
But seriously, I’m glad that they simplified things and made it easy to remember.

Hey FallN – LOL – I *love* your naming scheme – that had me laughing huge when I read that – especially the Say Hello To My Little Friend – good stuff …

So, what would you call the “Bill Gates Signature” Edition??
I actually really liked tjchan’s idea. Call it Junion, Donkey Kong adn King Kong. Heck, every so often, it could even launch a projectile at you and youcoudl bash it with a hammer.
