When Is A Cell Phone…Just A Cell Phone?

There is a growing trend toward converged devices.  Cellphones these days can do all kinds of things that had traditionally been left to computers: checking email, surfing the Internet, even editing documents.

So, what do you do when you need to make a phone call?  I’ve talked with a lot of people who have Smartphones, Blackberries and PDA phones.  They all have the same complaint.  While they can do just about anything with a converged, they can be difficult to dial and talk into.  So, there is a growing market for people like my Mother-In-Law who want a cell phone that they can use to
make and receive telephone calls.

For this market, Gizmodo has found the Samsung SGH-C140, a cell phone that is…a telephone, and nothing else.  According to Gizmodo, Samsung has stripped all of the advanced features that many people crave, to give back the feature that many cell phones seem to be missing these days.  But don’t thing they have stripped off all of the fun.  This is not an old fashioned rotary phone.  In addition to making phone calls, it also features:

  • a 128×128 65K-color screen
  • 16-tone polyphonic tones
  • 3 hours of talk time
  • store 500 contacts in its organizer

All for just $57…

It is nice to see that at least some of the manufacturers are still bringing out phones with the basic functions. It may be a move to please the consumers who are not technically-inclined, feels no need for the added features or simply wants a WORKING (I’ve has several incidents which my PDA phone hanged when I received a call) phone. Sometimes, all these added features such as camera, music player, FM radio etc are simply bogging down the performance and battery life and bring endless agonies to the user.

Recently, I have just met one guy with a Palm 505 and a Nokia 8210. He is still making great use out of them and has no plan to move on to the latest devices.
