Divergence

Do you want a converged device? Right now I use a Dell Axim x50v and I really like it. The vga screen is great for movies, games and gps, it has bluetooth and wifi and it’s a dependable device. I have an 30 Gigabyte iPod for music, and a cellphone. If I combined them all into one device then I would have to make sacrifices. What would I sacrifice? I don’t want to sacrifice hard drive space for music, nor do I want to give up my vga screen, bluetooth or wifi, or even my touch screen. Does such a device exist that provides everything I want? But I also want it to be compatible with Nextel and have push to talk, which we use at work. Does the new iPod phone have all these things, or most of them? Didn’t Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO, take some rips at the iPhone saying it’s, "not suitable for business purposes", due to it’s lack of a keyboard and 3G support. Oh well, I guess that phone isn’t for me either.

And I like the idea of the UMPC computers, or Ultra Mobile pcs, but they just don’t seem to fit into any  niche yet. They’re too big for a pocket, too small to compete with a laptop, and they have no real processing power and very few have a real keyboard. I can’t clip them to my belt either. I’ve been thinking about tablet pcs, but now I’m really far from convergence, aren’t I!

I think I’m just going to wait. I don’t want a "jack of all trades, master of none" device that I won’t enjoy. Batman had different devices for different occasions. Why can’t I? You know, that gets me thinking, when you go to some sites like Dell, you can build your own pc and add all the accessories you want. Will we be able to do that with our converged devices? That might be a good solution. But that’s just my opinion.

Initially, I thought having a converged device will save me the trouble of carrying mutliple devices and accessories. However, only after carrying one for some time do I realise the sacrifices made in doing so.

Taking my hw6965 for an example, a square-screen PDA with phone, GPS and camera functions and it is considered a good converged device for some. It has an uncommon screen resolution, making some applications incompatible or some configurations inaccessible. The weakness of the camera needs no special mention here and I don’t use it at all. The built-in GPS is a welcomed feature but takes its toll on the already pretty-short battery life. All these did not make the experience any more pleasant and I am starting to look for alternative dedicated devices.

I may have made a mistake when choosing the hw6965 and I try to live with it. It is difficult to ignore the shortcomings when you need a particular function to do well. I will be going back the path of diverged devices once my current device goes out of commission. Having an all-in-one device which makes sacrifices on most of the fundamental features is simply too troublesome.
