iPhone – What’s Missing?
Not much. That’s for sure. The thing looks and sounds unbelievable. Jobs’ line about ‘we’ve reinvented the phone’ does not seem over the top.
So what’s missing from the iPhone?
3G – As Brandon mentioned in a comment on an earlier post, they *have* to have 3G – Edge will not cut it, and the wonder
ful full browser impact will get nullified.
Apps – That’s the only other key missing link for me, for now. Yes it’s got OSX as its engine, and has the full browser, and will probably have pretty good email client and other ‘mobile package’ sort of solutions from Google and Yahoo judging by their heavy links to it. But … I want my favorite and can’t live with out Windows Mobile apps too! Digital wallet programs, note-taking apps, PIM products, lots of them that are essential to me on every mobile device.
That is maybe Macs’ one big weak area even as PCs – to me, that’s why it’s so popular to run Windows on the newer Intel Macs – because the rich range of applications is there. And I want that for my mobile device too!
I’ve been severely under the weather (sick) today, so have not seen any other sites’ reactions – so I expect there are other things missing, other cool things to talk about (lots) between here and June – but those are my two big missing pieces for now …

One other problem I see is the price. One reason that the iPod took off was that it was priced to the average consumer. This will be one of the highest price phones/Smartphones on the market. For that kind of money, and to not even run any of my apps…which means you would have to buy all new apps and pay $100 or more a month for the phone/data plan. That just skyrockets too much too quickly.

Ahem… Treo 750?
Price $649.99
2-yr Contract Price $499.99
Online Discount - $0.00
Mail-in Rebate - $100.00
*Your Price $399.99
Total Savings 20.00%
*2 yr contract-New service price
That doesn’t include the monthly plan at $40 for data and another $40 for voice.
Let’s be honest here … the applications thing – sure. I’ll agree there. BUT this thing has 8GB of storage. Your average smartphone? 2GB.
It IS an iPod. It is a phone. It does email. It (theoretically) can run OSx Widgets… bah. It’s not even out of FCC approval. I’ll bet you warm up to the concept soon enough.

I like the concept. Don’t get me wrong, I think it is an awsome looking phone. I just wouldn’t spend $600 on it. Then again, I am not here spending $600 on a Treo either. I would like to…but that is a whole different story.
