Quick Tips: Summary of great tips from Howard Forums BlackJack Thread

Original Thread

Yes … I’ve read the 35 pages of posts and did myself a favor – I copied out everything that I personally found useful and some tweaks that I wanted to make sure I didn’t lose for later. I’ve got some more tips coming from other places and things I’ve found on my own so I’ll be adding some more over the next little while. I’ll leave a couple on the main page so you get an idea of what’s covered….

Ditch the Blackjack Startup & Shutdown Screens/Sounds

——————————————————————————–

If you find the startup and shutdwon screens on the Blackjack to be annoying, you can get rid of them with a registry change as folows:

HKey_Local_Machine>system>
-under system there are two entries: Shutdown and Startup
-under each one you will find an entry named 1
-under 1 there is a value name of Dll
-the default value for both entries is OemAnimationDll.dll
-change the default value data of each of those files (startup and shutdown) to the word none (I suppose null would work also but I know the word none does for sure)
-after changeing the value to none, back out to the main menu – wait a couple seconds and shut down and then restart, and you will find the annoying shutdown and startup screens and audio are gone.

When you shut down, hold the on/off button down for the normal 2-3 three seconds and release. At that point when you normally would have seen the shutdown screen and audio, it appears that nothing is happening, but just be patient and wait the few seconds a shutdown normally takes and the screen will go blank as the unit powers off.

On startup, you will immediately see the standard blue Windows Mobile Screen which will be there until the home screen comes up and loads. Just remember that it still takes the normal time to shutdown and startup. I guess all the startup and shutdwon OEM .dll files did was run in the foreground while the normal o/s functions ran in the background.

You can change the sound using the HKLMSoftwareHTCStartup and HKLMSoftwareHTCShutdown

You are correct. Fn + B toggles Bluetooth. There are a few other (not-so-useful) shortcuts listed in the Getting Started Guide that ships with the Blackjack:

Fn + C = Cingular Mall
Fn + M = Cingular Music
Fn + V = Cingular Video
Fn + W = MEdia Net

I noticed If you hold a key down it will auto switch to its alternate character!

Gmail message deletion solved
Those of you who are having an issue with GMail messages being deleted – put the word recent: in front of your username in the Outlook setup.

recent:username@gmail.com

I posted a long version of how to set it up on a BlackJack on the Cingular board:

In any of the edit fields (contacts, I.E., and others) if you hold down Undo (top right U-Turn with an arrow) it will delete the contents of the field you are in.

In I.E. it’s nice because it’s smart enough to only delete the portion of the field to the right of http://

Recurring message notification:
Here’s the app everybody uses on the Motorola Q, works fine on any other WM5 smartphone as well:

The author is Czech, so don’t mind the language translation issues…the app works fine.

Hold down message key to turn off backlight on screen.

My little Contribution
— Use the directional pad to navigate between messaging accounts (like outlook / sms / mms)

— Remember my review of the i320 and the little lines that outlined various keys? Well that little dialing trick works with the BlackJack too. See the image below:

— Change the right softkey on your homescreen – go to Start / Settings / Key Settings / Home Screen RSK

— Change the Side key – same area as soft key. (This is the side button long press option)

— Save some cash on a data cable … the Samsung OEM d807 cable is identical and works just as well. (eBay they’re like $5). I bought one of the $24.99 Samsung d807 cables from the Cingular store for my BlackJack (lost mine in the snow one night) and it worked like a charm, like I said save some cash and buy a d807 cable from eBay.

if you are reading an email, press the center d-pad “action” button… it will take you to the new contact entry with that persons email address already filled in.

hold down any key while typing to get it’s “Alternate” character. i.e. Hold down the Q for a moment and you’ll get the symbol. This is nice if you don’t like hitting Caps/Shift Q to get it.

First, make sure you “application unlock” your phone. (Search if not familiar)
Copy the .exe file over to your phone via active sync. Use the File Explorer to locate the .exe on you phone and select it once. Nothing will be visible but that will activate it. Then go into any editable field, like an email, and press and hold the dpad OK button. You’ll see the menu appear.

Nice Little Start Menu Mod….If you go into the start menu, you only have 6 apps on the page due to the icon text. This mod takes away the text, leaving you only with icons. The text now will show up on the top of the page, letting you see 9 apps per start menu page.

HKEY Current User\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Start Menu>Hide Labels
Change hide_labels value from 0 to 1
Restart

Another…

Here is a registry change that will allow you to change your default library in Media Player from “My Device” to “Storage Card”

Change:
KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Pr eferences\LastLibraryIndex

From 0 to 1.

Are you using IE to access the internet? If so, this is a known problem and the way to fix it is to fire up IE and then:

Menu->Options->Connections: change this to WAP.

The above comment is not true. The BlackJack is not a phone by HTC and does not have the registry key.

How do you “Navigate to: HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftInbox”??

Is that a function on the phone, or what? I am lost.

Thanks for any help possible!!

You’ll need a registry editor for the phone. I use the one that comes with Resco Explorer (Resco Registry editor) or you can try the free regeditSTG http://www.modaco.com/index.php?s=dbdeef030708435a7ae05e62ab63df04&act=attach&type=post&id=17041

As you’ve suspected, that’s not a built-in function on your phone, or a built-in program. You’ll need to go get a registry editor application for Pocket PC. There are some good free ones, and paid for ones, and also all-in-one (very good value) apps like SKTools which will include this ability along with many other hugely useful functions. Once you have one of these, you will then be able to navigate the registry hives / areas mentioned in the tip. Hope that helps …
