Site Updates - Heads Up
Posted by: PatrickJ on Dec 31 2006 - 741 viewsJust a quick heads-up for you. We’ve been doing some work on our site navigation and layout - in an effort to make things easier to find for you whenever you visit.
And we’re still working on things - so don’t be surprised to see quite a few things on the sidebars and category listings change over the next several days. Please be patient with us while we work to get the best end result.![]()
For now, the main things we’ve modified are:
- Added the Live Chat plugin back - for now, living at the bottom of the right sidebar.
- Changed the order of several sidebar items - moved Categories and Recent Conversations up higher on each of the sidebars, so they’re quicker to get to.
- Reduced the number of top-level categories (and we’ll probably still look to trim this further).
- Added some sub-categories, mainly under Reviews and Windows Mobile Software - so you can skip to a topic area more easily. So when you go to the Reviews section as a whole, you then get a short menu of the Reviews sub-categories, for example.
- Moved the JAMM search box right over by the Categories list.
Anyway, we’ve got lots more to do - but we hope some of this will ultimately make things better and more fun when you come to visit. As you can see from the graphic, we’ve got the very best men working on this - Charlie and Emilio!
Please take a moment and let us know what you think … how we can improve things, do you want the Live Chat to stay, do the category listings make sense - all your feedback will be hugely appreciated - as our goal with all of this is to keep improving the site for you all.
Thanks …

Zune Grabs an End of Year Award at IGN

"For lack of major innovation in the portable audio market in 2006, the Zune takes the win for at least offering some new features."
At IGN.com they’ve chosen the Zune as ‘Best Portable Audio’ for 2006. Now as you can see from the quote above, the enthusiasm level is far from huge for the winner. It’s more of a ’since the rest of the field stood pat’ by default sort of win, but the IGN folks do have some good things to say about Zune’s hardware, UI, and potential.
Thanks to the guys at Zunearama for the post on this.

Exploit Now Out There for MMS Vulnerability
Posted by: PatrickJ on Dec 30 2006 - 1,687 viewsVia: Mobility Site
Symantec Security Response Weblog has posted a note warning that an exploit is in the wild that uses the multimedia messaging service (MMS) as a vector.
They summarize the status on this as:
- There has been a publicly disclosed vulnerability for over six months now.
- There is no patch for this vulnerability.
- There is an exploit now out there.
- There is no easy way to patch the vulnerable devices due to the lack of auto updates
The key point - for me - in the Symantec article is the lack of an effective distribution method for patches / updates to Windows Mobile devices. I think that’s an area where some third party vendors will start (have already started) to lead the way and will get more attention and sales in the near future.
In terms of the threat level from this vulnerability, I may just not move in the right sort of circles - but I really don’t know anyone who uses MMS, at all. I get the impression most people may have looked at it once, thought it was lame, and never glanced back at it. I know I’ve never looked back at it until just now, and that was only to grab a quick screencap of the lovely ‘Boing’ clipart.
So … are many of you / any of you using MMS at all? Concerned about MMS vulnerabilities and Windows Mobile patching methods?
