The Arrival: Samsung Q1 UMPC
Today, I received a happy surprise in the mail, my very own (to borrow) Samsung Q1 Ultra-Mobile Portable Device (UMPC). The UMPC (which I received compliments of our friends at Dynamism) has been touted by Microsoft as the next big step in portable devices. Well, so far, I have only had time to take mine out of the box and check it out, but it is a relatively impressive looking device. It comes in a sleek black case, bearing two USB ports, Wifi (g) and Bluetooth connectivity, and a VGA out port to hook it up to a monitor. The model I received sports 1 GB of RAM and a 60 GB hard drive. It also came with an array of software, including the Windows XP tablet edition for an operating system. For now, I am only going to share a few preliminary pictures (I apologize for the poor quality in some of them. My lens is not great for this kind of work), however, in the coming weeks, I will periodically post updates with my thoughts as I take the UMPC through the rigors of my daily life. From here, you will hear the good, the bad, and the ugly. Happy Thanksgiving. Now, keep reading for some initial photos.
Here is is out of the box (shown with all of the cables, including the USB sync cable and power cord).
Here are a few shots showing the comparison of the UMPC to my Axim.
Another comparison shot. This one shows it with an array of devices. As you can see, it weighs in much larger than the Axim, but much smaller and lighter than a laptop.
That is all I have for now. I’ll write more about specific features as I have an opportunity to test them out…so stay tuned!!

Yup … me too. I’ve always wondered how the real world would take one of these devices. Doug is exactly the kind of user I would want to look at it and give his opinions.
