Quick Tip: POP Gmail on Blackjack
Thanks to dre3101 for this — Original post here
Gmail in your inbox … here’s a handy workaround for your Smartphone (and maybe PDA) to have gmail in your inbox…
- Setup your Gmail account to allow POP access (this is done in the settings section)
- Go to Messaging on the Blackjack
- Click on New Account
- Select Other POP3/IMAP. Click Next.
- Enter your Gmail information (name, email address). Click Next.
- Click Next again to skip the automatic download of settings.
- Enter your Gmail username like this: recent:username@gmail.com, enter your password. Click next.
- Click next on the Server Type screen. (POP3 is correct) (You can alternately rename the account name here to make it easy to recognize) READ ON FOR MORE!!!
- Type
in pop.gmail.com for incoming server, smtp.gmail.com for outgoing.
Make sure that all of the SSL boxes are checked. Click next. - On the download the following messages screen, select all messages, and entire message. Click next.
- Have it check every 15 minutes. Click next.
- Click finish.
- Click Yes to confirm.
At
this point, you are good to go. If you use Outlook or the like for an email program, your emails will show up in both places now. Your Blackjack will have the exact same emails.

UNLIMITED DATA IS GOING TO BE IMPORTANT!
Also, just as an FYI – this can run side by side with an Exchange sync!!

Hmmmm. I can get mail fine, but I can’t send mail via any of the gmail accounts I have set up on my blackjack. Any thoughts as to what might be needed?

@jeremynyc – make sure you have selected the SSL boxes and also verify that you have enabled the option for Outgoing server requires authentication. Also I’ve seen some instances that require you to use the correct ports for their servers – I believe it’s 995….

Does anyone else find though that the messages appear in your inbox, but as soon as you click ‘send and receive’ again they all disappear from it. Even if I’ve read them, I often want to keep them there to then reply to at a later date.
Doesn’t happen in desktop OE, but happens on my mobile devices (PPC 2003, WM5 -smartphone and PPC).
On gmail I have option selected ‘keep google’s copy in the inbox’, but have also tried ‘archive google’s copy’.
Any tips to solve this I’d be most grateful for!!!!!!

Are you setting up the account using your username as recent:YourUsername?
I’ve not had what you explained on a single one of my devices using this setup. What you’re explaining is definitely odd behavior!
JAY
Jul 14, 2007
What do you mean ‘recent:YourUsername’?
On my username bit I use the bit before the ‘@’ sign. eg.
email: jay@gmail.com
Username: jay
I take it you mean the settings on my mobile device?
It happened on my Ipaq (PPC 2003) and it also happens on my WM5 Axim.

Ah… tha might be it. Re-read the instructions above this will make more sense … your gmail account username when you are setting up the account.

Ahhhhhhh ……!!!!!! I really should learn to be more observant!
So I put the entire email address …. but this is probsbly a REALLY daft question … but I tske it I also enter the ‘recent:’ portion too??
Thank you, that is a GREAT HELP …. I shall try it. I’ve been trying to find the solution to that for about 2 years!!! I shall try it IMMEDIATELY!

Hi, I am having the same problem. I did everything you said, but when I am done it asks me to enter my password. When I enter the information, it comes back to the same screen. What do I do. Please let me know.
Thank You!!
Brandon

make sure you have entered the email address properly. If you know the password is correct, then make sure the email address isn’t missing a letter or something like that. Also make sure the format is correct —
recent:you@gmail.com
Finally, did you check the boxes that say the servers require SSL? If not this won’t work.

thanks this was very helpful in setting it up and my gmail works great now except every time i send an email it sends it and works fine but it also sends it back to me as a new email, so in my inbox, but only on my phone, not on outlook, i get an email from myself and this happens everytime i send one, any thoughts?

if you keep getting the message “enter password”, then you have not enabled POP access in gmail. So go to your PC and login into gmail, click settings, click forwarding and enable pop forwarding for all email.

good idea Jack … been so long since I enabled pop that I forgot you had to!

OK, followed directions and get this error: “The remote party has ended this connection”.
Any ideas?

okay, so i did everything you said but when I try to connect on my blackjack it says that my internet connection is not configured properly. and that I should verify my settings in Data Connections.
my internet works fine though
and should my outgoing server be
stmp.gmail.com
or
stmp.gmail.com:username@gmail.com?
thanks this forum has been a big help.

I had a POP3 account set up for work and I could receive emails but I couldn’t send them. If your smtp outgoing server setting isn’t working you can try cingulars smtp setting. cwmx.com is the outgoing smtp server. I entered this in account settings and now I can send messages. Hope this helps someone.

These instructions work for receive, and maybe they used to work for sending, but they do not now, for me at least. Given the number of others posting here that have the same problem, I’d same some if not all of us are affected.
To make everything including sending work, follow the OP instructions *but* you must click the “Outgoing Server Settings” link on the servers info page, and then choose “Use different user name for outgoing”. Put your regular username and password for this, NOT the recent: part which is what is causing send to fail.
HTH, it works great for me

Interestingly enough … I don’t have to do anything other than make sure I’ve selected SSL for both connections and that the outgoing server requires authentication. The recent: thing in from of my name seems to have no effect on my account.
For what its worth I’ve used this exact same method on:
Blackjack, T-Mo SDA, iPaq hx2495, Treo 750 and a cingular 8525. Thankfully my iPhone does it all for me

I just tried this on my Blackjack II, and everything works smoothly, except any mail I send shows up in my inbox as new mail for me. Any way to fix this?

TallLefty. This is actually related to the way Gmail threads messages. The best thing to do here is create a filter on the account which will automatically move everything with your name in the From line to a separate folder.

Actually TallLefty24 … that might also be a function/flaw of using recent: in front of your username.

I said goodbye to POP a while back, and I’m using IMAP4 again – it just works better and doesnt send me back an email from myself every time i send a message.
instead of pop.gmail.com, use imap.gmail.com, and DON’T use recent: in front of your user name, and select SSL for both incoming and outgoing.
tested on both WM5 and WM6 (Samsung i607 BlackJack)
