Quick Tip: Remote Display Control for Smartphones

First off … this obviously was not made for WM5 – BUT it works and it’s free. Second … there’s a bit of delay where it starts off with the screen too big for you to see the buttons. So patience is called for, but thankfully it’s only a short delay before you can see the connect button. I don’t have a nifty new landscape device so if someone wants to give this a go on a Dash or something similar…

 Anyway, let’s get started.

Download the Windows Mobile Developer Tools from HERE. Connect the phone to activesync.

The bummer(well partially) with this package is it doesn’t install to the phone automatically. There is a script you can run to do it, but I just copied the cerdisp.exe from ActiveSync_Remote_Display_Control to my device (Storage Card). Now grab cedisp from HERE and install it too.

Once you have the install complete and the first file copied to your phone … start the host application on your desktop. Then start the application on your smartphone. When the openning screen finally resizes properly – click connect. Then click ok.

You should now be connected and able to control the phone from your desktop.  Unfortunately there’s no mouse support on smartphone so … key commands become your friend. (Remember: It’s Free)

  • Left Softkey: F1
  • Right Softkey: F2
  • D-Pad Navigation: Cursor Keys
  • Action Button: Enter
  • Home Screen: Windows Key
  • Back: Backspace/ESC
  • Volume Up: F6
  • Volume Down: F7
  • [*] key: F8
  • [#] key: F9

Ah…So tempting… but, I think I have a better control using my thumb on my DASH. :)

This isn’t going to be nearly as handy for people like you with a keyboard on the device, but let’s be honest the WPM on a thumboard isn’t nearly what you can achieve on a real keyboard … and for those of us without a keyboard on the device (T-Mobile SDA) this little trick kicks butt.

I’ve been looking longingly at my 8125 all week (I miss my keyboard so much it’s disgusting) but I swore I would give smartphone a run for it’s money. It’s growing on me – but I HATE not having a keyboard. I think by the end of this week (if I’m not on a Blackjack) I’ll be back on my 8125 just because it has a keyboard and not because of the OS which I orginally thought would be the undoing. I do so much through email for the site, and long winded texts between friends that I just can’t handle the lack of qwerty…

Love it.. work great, by the way, just hit the action button when the splash screen comes up and you don’t have any delay until you reach the connect screen.

Has anyone ever figured out how to kill the Cerdisp app ?? it’s not displayed in the built-in task manager and the little task manager app that I downloaded fails when I attempt to kill the process. The app hides completely and only displays that little cerdisp icon in the title bar while running .. however, on a smartphone it’s not possible to click that stupid thing to come up again.

    Thanks for any hints !

    Fabian.
