UMPCs Make ‘Scariest Tech of 2006′ List

Via: CNNMoney.com

According to Peter Lewis, in a Fortune / CNN.com piece called ‘Scariest Tech of 2006′, the UMPC is "doomed to wander in computing limbo forever".

The arguments for placing the UMPC on this list that nobody’s product wants to be on include the by-now standard ‘it’s too big to fit in a pocket and too small to really be a workhorse’ line of thinking.

It seems to me it’s still way too soon to tell whether UMPCs are going to take off or not. They certainly need to improve on battery life and some of the form factor and useability areas – but I’ve also seen a lot of *very* positive reports coming out from real power users of these devices.

All of the guys over at the OnTheRun blog site have been working with the Samsung Q1 and doing some pretty cool stuff with it – from successfully running Windows Vista to finding creative and productive uses for OneNote on it. See this recent ‘Day In The Life of a Samsung Q1 SSD’ post as a good example of the mileage you can get from a UMPC.

I still feel tempted to try one of these out very soon. What do you think of UMPCs – tempted to get one if it fits your budget?

I’m excited about this technology. Just add a bluetooth keyboard and off you go!
