Scobleizer Views on Zune vs. iPod

"My son is a good gauge of whether Zune has a chance. Peer pressure is hyper strong to have an iPod. If you show up to school with something that isn’t an iPod you aren’t cool. Now, that’ll change if kids think there’s something cool or better."

Robert Scoble has a very good post up with his thoughts on Zune vs. iPod. He’s recently done a video blog interview with a Zune product manager, was of course a longtime Microsofter, and knows a thing or two about tech topics and buzz generally.

The article offers a very concise but very thorough run-down of how the two devices stack up in a bunch of key areas – from box design and look & feel, through screen quality and ‘conversationality’ (nice term for their ability to cause a conversation).

Naturally, I’m not going to give away the final conclusions – but they seem sound to me and he offers up one crucial area where the Zune may have a *potential* edge that might bridge some gaps with the iPod – and he definitely has some sharp thoughts on whether or not the Zune has a ‘killer feature’ to help it compete with the established leader.

Here we go again ….

Updateability: better than iPod (if I were Apple I’d worry about this).

HUH????!!! I’ve seen a ton of iPod updates get sent out. The software is upgradeable. Zune’s software is upgradeable. How is the Zune a winner here? Holy Schnikeys Batman – Zune has a software update feature – we need to go buy it RIGHT NOW! Forget aftermarket developers and games. iPod has games right now. Go to the Apple website – click on iPod – they are right there available for download now. Not 2 years from now.

Integration: beats the iPod cause it works with Xbox.

Never mind the Honda’s, Acura’s, Toyota’s, Chevy’s Ford’s etc etc etc that the ipod works with. Let’s ignore the MILLIONS of cars out there to justify the Zune as slightly better because it works with the Number 2 console on the market. (Playstation IMHO is twice the system – and I own an xbox).

I agree to a certain extent … on some of he issues. But I refuse to be a Microsoft appologist and looks for magical “could happen” 2 years down the road (which is what he’s doing here). The thing is going to be a dud. Microsoft taking a loss for a couple years for the sake of market share is the only reason I think this thing will still be here 2 years from now. If it it hits the popularity that the xBox has within 6 months …. mark my words I’ll appologize for all of my Zune bashing on the front page of the site – everyday for a week.

Great read – if you need something that makes you feel better about the Zune. Great read – if you think too many people are hoping they haven’t been generating buzz for dog poop LOL

It was a good read. I enjoyed it.

Well … I don’t think Scoble is much of an MS apologist at all. If he was, there’s no way his blog and thoughts would be as hugely popular as they are. And I don’t think his post was in that vein *at all*.

He says the Zune ‘abjectly fails’ as an Edge Case. He also says “It does not have a killer feature. Sorry, Microsoft, sharing songs is not it.” He points out several key things it does NOT have – solution to DERM pains, microphone, podcast client, ability to record off FM tuner and so on. He pretty much says that gauging from his son’s reactins, it won’t win over ‘the kids’.

And his conclusion is, in part, “But, for now, I’d stick with an iPod”

I really don’t read that post as any sort of advert for the Zune.

I said I agreed with him on some of the issues … but the way (specifically the ones above) were written – well that’s what I found to be appologist. Someone reads this – takes it as gospel and buys a zune because it has better connectivity and is updateable whereas the iPod isn’t. That’s the kind of stuff that really annoys.

Anyway, you’re right it wasn’t all appologist. It was a good read (I mentioned that above to)… just has some FUD points in it that bugged me. You know me – Zune is going to prune.

I suppose that’s true – if someone just took to heart those slices they might be swayed a little towards a Zune. I guess I would go into it hoping that most would digest the whole article before being swayed one way or the other.

I still think the whole Zune vs. iPod ‘battle’ will be very interesting to see. I think one of Scoble’ good points was how much of an uphill battle MS will have on the marketing side of things, because Apple has set such a high standard. I know we’d all like to believe that quality of product wins out over ad campaigns, but that just isn’t the case – so I reckon the marketing battle will end up being a BIG factor …
