More Support for Mobile Linux

"The demand for an open platform for mobile devices is growing as hardware makers and developers look for alternatives to Symbian and Microsoft, and find Linux can provide a cheaper faster way to bring devices to market." – Katie Fehrenbacher at GigaOM

GigaOm has got a post up detailing the recent purchase of a Linux mobile software company – Celunite – by venture buyout firm Garnett & Helfrich Capital.  This is seen as another indication that there is some strong momentum for Linux in the mobile devices area.

I’m a big Windows Mobile fan, and don’t necessarily see myself running a Linux-based smartphone in the near future. But … it does seem like a good thing for all of us if Linux-based devices and open source applications heat up the competition. This should be good in terms of producing some more innovative mobile hardware and software, and in driving prices down.
